Tips To Reducing Stress And Stopping Anxiety

by Graham Brightwell

Stress is seemingly endless and unstoppable. Bills don't stop coming, your family responsibilities and career are always demanding, you cannot add more hours in a day. But you can have more control than you think. The mere realization that you are the one in charge of your own life is the first step to managing stress. Stress management is all about being in control of your emotions, thoughts, schedule, and the manner you deal with people and circumstances in life.

Stress management begins with identifying the things that triggers stress. This is not easy. The real sources of stress are often not very obvious; and it is very easy to overlook your stress-inducing behaviours, feelings, and thoughts. Sure, you may be aware that you are always worried about deadlines in the office. But perhaps it is your procrastination and not the actual demands at work that causes deadline stress. To pinpoint the true sources of the stress you are experiencing, you have to look very closely at your excuses, attitude, and habits.

Do you blame other people, circumstances, or outside events for the stress you're experiencing or see it as unexceptional and completely normal?

Do you consider stress as an integral component of your home or work life or as part of your temperament?

Unless you realize and accept responsibility for your role in creating and/or maintaining such feeling, the level stress you'll experience will continue to be beyond your control.

Avoid Unhealthy Ways of Managing Stress

The following stress management strategies could reduce stress temporarily, but they actually cause much more damage in the long run: sleeping too much; under sleeping or oversleeping; smoking; spending too much time in front of the television or computer; drinking too much, withdrawing from family, friends, and activities; abusing drugs or pills; procrastinating; avoiding problems; taking out stress on other people (physical and verbal violence, angry outbursts, and/or lashing out).

Healthier Ways to Stress Management

If your strategies of managing stress are not really contributing to your increased physical and emotional health, it is time to look for healthier methods. There are many healthier ways to handle and cope with stress, but all require some kind of change. You could either change your reaction or change the situation. When making a decision on which option to go with, it is helpful to keep in mind the four A's: alter the stressor, avoid the stressor, accept the stressor, or adapt to the stressor.

Since each person has a very different response towards stress, there's no one-fits-all solution to handling it. No single strategy works for everybody or in all situations, so try various strategies and approaches. Focus on those that make your feel in control and calm.
