Possible addition or modification to your article: "Opportunities In Wagon Jobbing And Rack Merchandising".
Hello HowToAdvice.com,
I just found and read your article "Opportunities In Wagon Jobbing And Rack Merchandising".
Since 1/1/1985 I have been Wagon Jobbing, and Rack Merchandising along with Bulk Vending.
I found your article to be well written, concise, and informative. I was surprised that of the Sources which you'd mentioned, that I, and now with my wife, have used several of them during our past 28 1/2 years in business.
A rule that I've developed that has been very beneficial to both us and the locations, is that we guarantee that the location will not lose on any item which we sell. i.e., if we sell a dz. keychains to the location, we guarantee that they will recoup their entire investment within a "reasonable time". As most of our items are turn-key, allowing the merchant to double, if they use our SRP, and don't sell at least half within that "reasonable time", we'll buy it back.
Although your article mentioned "trust" several times, IMO if it stressed honesty of the Jobber, or Consignment Artist, it would have been just a little better. This is because, since we've been doing this, one of our first locations had stressed to me that "honesty" was an absolute must. (( We still have that location. )) Plus, since we've been in business, I've personally noticed that the average Vending Machine Operator is dishonest to some degree or another. The same is often correctly said about many Wagon jobbers, Rack Jobbers and other Consignment Artists. Being aware of "Being Above and Beyond Reproach at all times", has gained new locations and has kept established ones.
I'm rather gregarious and fairly well get along well with our locations as real friends. In turn, many treat us similarly. We even have a few locations who've had bad reputations with other suppliers, who after dealing with us, treat us very well.
We enjoy our method of earning a living. We've consigned and sold to many different places, discovering what works and what doesn't. Times change, and we try to change products, and even to try different kinds of locations, too.
I'm now ready to sell much of our business due to health problems and age ((69 in October)), but I'll never choose total retirement, as my wife and I enjoy getting out into the public, and being able to earn a living by simply helping other people to make a better living, too.
I believe that a Consignment Operator or Wagon Jobber must be fairly educated, have an out-going personality, a strong work ethic, and high morals. Those which I've observed with some of those characteristics missing, soon fail.
Sincerely, Bob Butler / d.b.a. Butler's Vending ( ... and consignments).
