by Eric Lee

Riding a motorcycle is an experience unlike any other. The wind in your hair (only in select states), the sun on your back, and nothing but the open road - the sensation is almost like a drug. However, motorcycles are no longer just for the young and the reckless. Motorcycles are continuing to appeal to a larger group of people than ever before and famous people are getting in on the fun. Read more to find out some of the famous folks who ride bikes.

To start the list of famous people who wear their motocross gear and ride, let's take a look at some stars of the past. Anyone who has ridden a bike has seen the picture of Marlon Brando from The Wild One. In case you haven't, it's the essence of cool. Leather jacket, gloves, riding hat, sunglasses, Triumph Thunderbird, and of course, the brooding angst of youth. But Brando didn't just play a motorcycle rider in the movies, he also lived it. The motorcycle used in the movie was actually Brando's - and he didn't just buy it for the film. In fact, he was expelled from his high school for riding his motorcycle through the hallways.

Another rider from the old Hollywood crowd was Steve McQueen. McQueen wasn't just a guy who enjoyed riding motorcycles and dirt bikes. If his acting career hadn't panned out he could have made his living strapping on the motocross gear and riding with the best of them. Some of his riding chops are on display in the film The Great Escape where he casually maneuvers his motorcycle like it was an extension of his body. In the film, McQueen's character is fleeing from the Nazis. McQueen was such a good rider that the riders chasing him could not keep up. To fix this, McQueen put on the Nazi costume and chased his double, pushing his motocross suspension as far as possible. So in a way, there are shots of McQueen chasing himself in the movie. However, despite popular belief, McQueen did not perform the famous jump over the barbed wire towards the end of the film. He wanted to and certainly had the skill for it, but for insurance reasons he was not allowed to.

Many professional athletes are drawn to motorcycles and motocross gear. The thrill on the field is hard to duplicate but motorcycle riding and motocross gear offers a good substitute. Michael Jordan got very into motorcycles after his retirement from the NBA. He got so into motorcycles in fact, that he even formed his own racing team and racing brand that offers motorcycle and motocross gear. Jordan does not race for the team, but he straps on the motorcycle and motocross gear and gets his laps in. Shaquille O'Neal also likes to ride and even had a custom bike built for him by Jesse James. Ben Roethlisberger rides as well, although he may not ride as much anymore. In a much publicized event, Big Ben got into an accident and was not wearing his helmet or any motocross gear. His injuries were actually pretty severe but the accident occurred in the off-season and he was back for the first game of the season.

Some other notable celebrities who ride include Sheryl Crow, Jay Leno, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Crow is a big fan of motocross and has put on the motocross gear many times. Crow even has a couple of kids that are sure to be wearing kids' motocross clothing and motocross gear before too long. Leno is a big fan of motorcycles and has a collection of over 60 bikes. Arnold rides as well and has taken his share of falls. One of his worst ones came in 2001 when he broke six ribs and had to be hospitalized for four days.

Riding motorcycles is an experience unlike any other and famous people have come to enjoy it too. The list of famous people who ride is actually quite extensive and often quite surprising. It's an experience that can and should be enjoyed by all, so go out and ride today.
