Construction Drawings – How it is done using Revit?

by Kimberly C. Smith

Construction drawings are very important and are needed in each and every step of construction during renovation of house or starting construction from scratch. Nowadays with the use of advanced technologies we can create construction drawings easily in revit as per the given client's standards. Construction drawing created using Revit involves high level of construction documentation which is not available with 2D drafting done in Autocad.

Most of the architectural firms have switched over to revit for construction drawings from traditional 2D drafting. Revit provides ample detailing of all type of construction drawings along with detailed reports. Thus making Revit a major platform for construction drawing is a smart and innovative idea of making project workflow smooth going. For construction drawings, revit provides informative description and high level of detailing for each and every phase of construction project.

Construction Drawings using Autocad and Revit:

Many architectural firms usually utilize Autocad for 2D drafting of construction drawings. Autocad provides 2D construction drawing like plan views, side views, elevations, etc. Such 2D construction drawings drafted in Autocad are imported in Revit to create 3D models of the same. This is the most common process of preparing construction drawings along with 3D models.

Now a day's preparation of 2D construction drawings are also preferred to be drawn in Revit due to number of advantages offered by Revit structural and MEP. Revit contains library in which all components are easily available with number of options e.g. doors, windows, stairs as per our requirement

Revit Structural:

Revit structural is used to create basic as well as complex architectural as well as structural models with basic components with beams, columns, foundation etc. Revit structure also enables to create architectural 3D models with number of options available to use for selecting doors, windows, railings, roof etc. We can also create Revit families of our own imagination as per requirement and can be used in any project then after.

Revit MEP:

Revit MEP can be widely used for Mechanical electrical and plumbing 3D models. Such MEP models can be easily coordinated with 3D construction drawing prepared in Revit structure. This helps to minimizes the clashes and makes model to look unique and informative.

Construction Drawing includes:

1. Plan views 2. Elevation views 3. Side views 4. Sectional views 5. Top views

Benefits of using Revit platform for construction drawings :

1. Overall reduction in project completion time: Using Revit for construction drawing helps us to save overall projection completion time as we can use directly these families no of times in project.

2. High level of construction documentation and detailing: Revit provides highly informative detailing with high level of reports which can be used at the time of actual construction.

3. Error free drawings: Construction drawings drawn using Revit reflects zero errors in drawings as it gives warnings to user for any major errors created while drawing. Thus we can say that preparing construction drawing in Revit is transition state from 2D traditional drafting in Autocad to detailed 2D drawings and 3D models in Revit.
