Wine Of The Month Clubs Are Not Just For Beginners
Most people tend to look at wine of the month clubs as they would other monthly membership clubs. They serve as a great introduction into a particular world - think book of the month clubs, that tend to offer general categories to appeal to the most people - but not something that is practical for people with a more advanced knowledge of the product. However, if they were to take a look into the world of wine clubs, they would be greatly surprised to see what they find.
There are certainly some wine of the month clubs that focus specifically on a particular varietal or region so minutely that they are designed to only appeal to a small slice of the market. The rest of the clubs however, find a way to reach out both to the novice drinker as well as to those looking for something a little more particular. They know that to be successful, they cannot just be a company that appears to randomly select bottles on a monthly basis and ships them out. Their customers trust them to deliver a superior product, and this goes for all levels of membership.
These clubs approach all of their members the same way: by introducing them to wines they most likely will not be able to have any other way. This does not mean they are searching for the most obscure wines out there or some super rare varietal that people have never heard of. Instead, they source wines from premium wine makers who are already well known in the industry. There are many small batch wineries all across the country that have a heritage of fine winemaking, but they have never produced large enough production runs to justify the cost of national distribution. They have remained local, selling only to those who visit the vineyard.
Wine of the month clubs are usually the first opportunity these winemakers have had to reach a larger audience. By choosing premium wines, these clubs assure all of their customers of wines that are superior to what they would be able to get on their own. This is important for the beginner wine drinkers: if they get wines they do not like, they may be lost as customers forever. It is just as important, however, for more advanced wine drinkers, because it affords them an opportunity they may not have known existed.
Many people who enjoy the wine lifestyle try to follow particular winemakers as they switch vineyards and begin new projects. These new endeavors tend to be small scale, resulting in wines that never leave their home region. Wine of the month clubs allow their members the chance to sample these wines, sometimes even to be the first in the country to do so. They quickly learn that joining a wine club will help them learn to enjoy wine even more than they already do.
