The Anxiety Wrap For Dogs Uses Deep Touch Pressure to Calm

by Karleen Lindsey

During the many years I have had the pleasure of working with dogs, I have encountered numerous different types and levels of stress in dogs. There are plenty of options to try in helping to calm your dog's out-of-control panic. One possible means of calming your dog is to use a body wrap or anxiety wrap for dogs, which will be discussed in this article.

One type of stress is due to having an expectation of pain, such as the anxiety brought on by the fear of nail clippers, possibly because a nail was clipped too short once, cutting into the quick which is painful.

There is also a type of anxiety over being left alone, otherwise known as separation anxiety. There are several degrees of this stress, from simply pacing and barking to destroying everything in its path trying to find and regroup the "pack".

Thunderstorms can induce panic in otherwise calm dogs to the magnitude of sending them crashing through plate glass windows, burrowing under beds, panting, trembling and totally inconsolable or even running blindly for miles.

Riding in a vehicle can also trigger anxiety in dogs, possibly from having a bad experience on their first car ride. They might have been injured in an accident at some point. Crating in a vehicle is usually the best means of safely transporting your dog.

Knowing why a dog reacts with irrational anxiety to a specific event is really not as vital as finding a way to help your dog calm that overwhelming anxiety.

One technique in calming a dog during an irrational hyperactive state is by implementing a tool called a body wrap or anxiety wrap for dogs. The principle leading to this method has been publicly documented in great depth by Temple Grandin, who developed a "hug box" using the same idea of calming pressure on the body. Because of her autism, Temple could not tolerate being touched, yet while visiting her aunt's ranch one summer she noticed how calm a cow was while being handled in the confines of a squeeze chute. She decided to invent a similar safe confinement for herself. Temple found that the deep touch pressure of the box on her body actually calmed her. It also helped bring her over-reactive senses to a focused plane that she could then deal with and accept.

This concept of applying deep pressure on the nervous system to bring about a calming effect is demonstrated in the anxiety wrap for dogs. This holistic approach to behavior modification is a healthy way to avoid sedatives. It can assist in easing your dog's anxiety in many situations, including thunderstorm terror and anxiety brought on by separation from you.

It is very imperative that when ordering any kind of anxiety wrap you measure your dog accurately in order to experience the desired results. Putting the wrap on too tightly will only make your dog uncomfortable and irritated. Fitting it too loosely could also irritate your dog and not induce enough constant pressure to have a calming effect. So being painstaking in the measurement of your dog is crucial. The method for this is by putting your dog in a standing position and measuring around the fullest part of the ribcage, usually the girth area, with a measuring tape that is either cloth or vinyl. Pull it snug, but not too tight, and don't round off the measurement. Be exact in your measuring.

The anxiety wrap for dogs is an effective tool to help your dog overcome its irrational fears and become a well balanced pet. However, not every dog in every stressful situation will benefit from the anxiety wrap, just as there is no one tool that will work in every capacity for a total population of people or animals. You might also notice that it does not altogether cure the panic your dog experiences, but may help to lessen it to an acceptable level. You might also need to use the wrap several times on your dog to gain its full effect. Many dogs will be calmed almost instantly. A few may take a little more time to gain the desired effect and a few don't seem to show any improvement at all by the body shirt.

The idea is to find and use whatever tools you can to try and help your dog overcome its unwarrented anxious state. If this just doesn't seem to an effective tool for your dog, there are other things you can try such as canine massage therapy, desensitization, herbal remedies, aromatherapy, and more.

The main point is that you not give up on finding a way to help your dog lessen its response to the anxiety issues that are wreaking havoc not only for your dog, but also for you and your family. Trying something such as an anxiety wrap for dogs may be a very affordable way to ease both you and your dog's anxiety level and readjusting your dog back to a healthy balance of mind and body.
