What's Wrong When Your Tap Is Spewing Brown Water?

by Nick Messe

It is most likely a problem in your house or building if the water is discolored when the faucet is first turned on but then turns clear after running for a few minutes. Also, if the water is only brown in some faucets in your house and not all of them then you know that it is localized somewhere in your house. If the water is discolored only when you run the hot water then it may be a problem with your water heater or water boiler. If the water is lacking in pressure, then you can be pretty sure that your pipes are having a problem.

You may determine that the water main is affected and causing the discoloration if the water becomes discolored after the water has been running for a few minutes, if only the cold water is discolored, or if the water left running for several minutes in all the faucets in all of your home continuously remain discolored. So, why the unsightly color? What causes your fresh water supply to have a dingy brown, sometimes yellow or orange color? Most often, this discoloration is caused by rust.

The inside walls of the water main can become rusty and in your home can be a result of sediment in the pipes. If the flow of water in a main is disturbed by the flushing of a hydrant or a break, then rust can be pushed into the water supply. Health officials usually say not to worry about this discoloration as far as your health is concerned. Just don't do your laundry in it.

If you suspect that the rusty pipes are in your house, it is best to get a plumber to inspect them right away. The pipes in your home could be rusting away and deteriorating which could cause eventual leakage, which is a major concern. If an area in your yard seems to have an overly wet area on a constant or reoccurring basis, then this could also indicate a leak in the plumbing. Plumbing repairs should be made as soon as possible in this scenario.

A plumber will be able to determine the exact place where the leaking is coming from by using special equipment. A nitrogen charge into the water line will let the plumber know exactly where the problem is. Plumbers should use a high quality copper pipe to make repairs to your water line. Typically, only a portion of pipe needs to be replaced and your property restored to its original condition.
