The Sylvia Browne Psychic Debate

Sylvia Browne Psychic: Is She for Real?

by Meg Tallon

What a controversy it is! Sylvia Browne is surely one of the most famous psychic celebrities in the limelight in recent times. She looks to be one of those people about whom one will state, "you either love her or you hate her." Sylvia's boosters depict her as very reputable, sincere, and inspiring, while her critics choose adjectives such as despicable, a hoaxer, and a con artist.

Sylvia Browne's journey began in Missouri in 1936. She reports being aware of psychic visions as young as 3 years of age. In conducting psychic readings, Sylvia attributes the insights she receives as being from God and she does her best to interpret this information clearly in relaying this insight to her clients. She maintains she reads a client's etheric pattern which becomes another source of information relevant to their life experiences, which she can offer to her clients.

Sylvia Browne has acheived best selling author status, is a regular guest on television talk shows, and hosts her own radio show through Hay House. She continues to provide individual psychic readings both face to face and over the telephone. Additionally, Sylvia operates the Sylvia Browne Corporation and has established a church in California, called the Society of Novus Spiritus.

Whether you believe in psychic powers or not, the controversy about Sylvia's legitimacy has been running since she emerged into the public eye. James Randi, a leading critic, contends that Sylvia is in no way a psychic, but a cold reader, which is a known method that creates the aura of clairvoyance when it is in reality nothing more than observing and reporting the obvious characteristics of the person being read. Anti-Sylvia Browne websites and discussion boards flood the worldwide web with a deluge of criticism about her. These greatly overshadow the proponents of Sylvia and her work.

While a sweeping record listing Sylvia's errors is readily available, it is truly difficult to turn up a record of her successes, aside from broad claims found on her own website. Sylvia Browne and her boosters claim that she is predominantly successful, rather than not, in her clairvoyance while assisting on police cases. They stress that she is particularly successful in forecasting future events likely to take place in someone's life.

Unfortunately for Sylvia Browne and her admirers, a recent high visiblility case of a kidnapped boy has again created doubt about her legitimacy. This is the chronicle of the 11 year old boy who was kidnapped four years ago and was recently found to be alive, living near his previous home. A few months after the boy was abducted, Sylvia reported that he was dead, and described the perpetrator in detail along with the location of the boy's body. This proved to be very inaccurate, and along side several other cases in which Sylvia has been proven inaccurate in her foretelling of events has fueled her detractors' mudslinging. Sylvia continues publicly to champion her work.

Inspite of the ups and downs in her fifty-year career, Sylvia Browne psychic has managed to entertain, and in some capacity, to serve, friends and enthusiasts throughout the decades.
