A guitar scale is a sequence of musical notes which are played one after the other either in an ascending or a descending order. In western music, the musical octave is divided into twelve sections known as semitones, which are represented by frets in case of a guitar. A guitar scale begins and ends with an octave.
In western music there are several scales, each of which has a particular note pattern and musical quality. But in order to play a guitar, the knowledge of a few basic scales is more than enough. In case of a guitar, if you know a particular guitar scale, you can use the same note pattern in another part of the fret board and play on a different key. The most common guitar scales are the pentatonic scale, the Major scale and the Minor scale, which is again divided into natural minor, melodic minor and harmonic minor scale.
The Major scale is the most important guitar scale and can be applied to various music styles. Regarded as the western music’s corner stone, it is composed of seven notes. The scale is of an upbeat quality which makes it an excellent choice for soloing in songs. Apart from the seven notes, the Major scale has an extra eighth note which is the first note’s duplicate but in a higher octave. In a guitar scale, the first note is referred to as the root of the scale, while the last note is the octave of the scale. The first note of a scale also determines its name i.e. whether it would be an A Major scale or a C Major scale. The notes of the Major scale are based on the formula: W W H W W W H. Here, W signifies whole step and H signifies half step.
A great soloing tool like the Major scale, the Minor scale has a moody and darker quality. It is denoted by the formula: W H W W H W W. A very popular guitar scale and one of the easiest to master, the pentatonic scale is composed of just five notes. The scale has a minor and a major variation and is denoted by the formula: W W (W+H) W (W+H). The pentatonic major scale is completely similar to the Major scale, except that it doesn’t have the 4th and the 7th notes of the Major scale. Loved by all guitar artists and a great scale for solos, the pentatonic minor can be used for playing any music, especially for producing melancholic sounds. Adding a single note to the minor pentatonic scale will turn it into the Blues scale, which is used by guitarists of the Rock and Blues genre
