Why Are Teachers On Strike Across The UK?

Two of the largest teachers unions, the National Unions of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters Union Of Women Teachers (NASUWT), have announced a strike on October 17. The two unions represent approximately 85 per cent of all teachers in the UK, and this was their second strike. The announcement of this strike followed another strike which took place at the end of June.

The strike has been organised as a response to the government’s actions to change salary system and pensions, which caused the teachers to organise a national walk-out day. Over 2,000 schools have been closed as a consequence of this walk-out, as the teachers protested and rallied against pay reductions and workloads. According Christine Blower, the general secretary for NUT, nothing has been done to address these issues, which have lowered morale in teachers. Blower also sees these issues as a threat to the continued provision of quality education, and said that industrial action is not taken lightly by teachers.
