Get a Foot in the Door. The Best Shoes for a Job Interview.

by Sharon Francis

Apart from being on punctual, being immaculatly turned for a job interview, and that includes your shoes, is of utmost importance, regardless of the type of job one is being interviewed for…so don’t forget about your footwear as they may be the most visible item of your interview attire! It is imperative one comes across as smart and well groomed. This indicates to the interviewer that you are serious about the job in hand and you will have the self confidence to follow through.

Here are a few hints as to what shoes are deemed appropriate for an interview... and the shoes should definitely be left at home in the cupboard.

There are many more choices in shoe style for women than for men on the market, however that choice is narrowed down significantly when it comes to choosing that right shoe for an interview. Ladies and Gentlemen, when choosing a shoe, make sure the following points are considered:

- For Women-

- The heel is not too high as tottering into the on too high heels will definitely not give the right impression to your potential future employer. Choose a low or mid height heel and above all comfortable shoe or a traditional black classic leather ballet style shoe, which may be more suitable for a taller individual. Interviews often take place over a whole day so donning a shoe that is not comfortable will take your mind off the task at hand. - A solid colour is chosen, ideally black, navy or brown, and the shoe colour should match any accessories that are worn. - Choose leather court shoes, preferably with a closed toe, with a traditional classic look. Black leather sling back style shoes may add a bit more variety and class to the outfit but make sure they are not too overzealous. Do however choose a shoe that is current with the fashion trends where possible.

-For Men-

- Black is the best colour for shoes being worn to an interview...and they should be leather. If shoes can't be black then make sure that they match the belt. - Go for quality, even if they cost more. There are a number of black classic leather shoes that will never be old fashioned, and if they are good quality the user will get years of use from them.

-For Both-

-If you can’t afford a pair of brand new shoes then choose a pair that you already own but make sure they are in top condition, clean and polished with no scuffs….

Never wear sandals with a suit, shoes that have a chunky look, toe, sole or heel, rubber soles, plastic shoes, casual shoes, loafers, anything metallic or sparkly, canvas, tie shoes, floral or brightly coloured shoes, heels that are too high.

Of course the job that one is being interviewed will have a small effect on which type or style of shoe should be chosen butif one sticks to the tips above then one should be well on the way to getting a foot in the door!
