Seeing Toronto For The First Time

by William Jason

Whenever I first started dating my wife, she knew that I was a really big hockey fan, and she wanted to take me to the hockey Hall of Fame, which was located in the heart of downtown Toronto. This was something I had always wanted to see ever since I was a kid, and since I was from the US, I had never really had a chance to visit it. She warned me that it was going to be quite a long walk from wherever we parked to get to the HHOF, but I didn't realize I would be walking for miles at a time. However, this is very common anytime you want to visit Toronto, unless you want to pay the outrageous parking fees in the hub of the city. Basically, the cheapest parking is on the outside of the city, and you can literally save $15-$20 by doing this.

As my wife and I were walking from the parking lot to the HHOF, we had to pass through this tunnel, and we encountered a homeless man there, walking with his pants down and he was mumbling something that we could not understand. This definitely was a little bit unnerving, but my wife had warned me before hand about the big homeless population in Toronto. As we started walking towards our destination, there was so much to take in, that it it was almost like sensory overload, as the city is so massive. There were gigantic buildings, hot dog vendors, and an array of people scurrying about their business. Whenever we finally arrived at the HHOF, I was quite surprised to learn that we could not enter through the front door, as we had to actually go inside a mall to access it. Seeing the Hockey Hall of Fame, was definitely a surreal experience and gave me a greater appreciation for the history of the sport I love so much.

After this, my wife took me to a local restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious lunch outside on the patio, while I took in all the sights and sounds of Toronto. After lunch, we headed back to the parking lot, where we encountered two people running around in chicken suits hugging people. I implored my wife to cross the street, as I didn't want to deal with what they were doing. All in all, I can say that visiting Toronto for the first time, was quite an eye-opening experience, and while I have returned many times since then, the first time really left quite the impression on me.
