Choosing The Right Service For A Loved One

by Alan Redman

It can be hard choosing a funeral service for a lost loved one and especially so if their death was unexpected and you do not know their preferences. Talking to a funeral director will help you make the right decision regarding their service.

The majority of people tend to opt for a traditional burial with a service held at either the grave side or church. This is often followed by what is called a 'wake' at the family home where people that didn't attend the actual service can pay their respects.

To hold a burial service you will first need to find a suitable burial plot. Your local funeral home can help with finding a location and organising the actual service so get in touch with a local firm as soon after the death as possible.

Once a location for the burial has been found then your funeral director will advise you of the date and time of the service. It will be up to family and friends to ensure that people are invited well ahead of time so they can make arrangements to attend. An announcement in a paper may also be a good idea to reach people a little further afield.

Your funeral director will also need help with music and hymn choices and if anyone is to speak at the service then this is the time to advise the funeral director so he can arrange the order of the service.

It is typically left to the family to arrange flowers and in some cases the family prefer donations to a charity preferred by the deceased. If this is the case then guests need to be advised of this at the time of the invitation.

If you decide to hold a wake at the family home then typically food is laid on for the guests. A local catering firm should be able to provide a simple buffet type spread so guests can help themselves throughout the day as they come and go.

Although holding a burial for a loved one may be more expensive than cremating them it is seen as a more traditional way of saying goodbye. If you want to hold a burial and money is an issue then discuss your budget with the funeral director. Services can be 'toned' down and be very simple to save on costs. Obviously the more elaborate the service the more costly it will be.
