The Law of Attraction (LOA) & its Role in Reaching New Sales Goals
Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Your answer could influence your entire business future. Here’s an exercise: just try abstaining from negative thinking for just one day and watch what power pours into your new and improved 24 hours!
Coach Nick says: Be an optimist. And 2008 is a great year to start.
You know the saying “whether you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right”? I live my 24 hours by that very concept. And all those days add up to productive and fulfilling years. If you are a purposeful and decisive optimist, you see glasses not just HALF full, you see them FULL full. To the brim.
It’s true - you get what you think about, whether desired or not – so I say, think about fervently desired things, as if they are assuredly yours. You are a charged magnet and you’ll be amazed what gets drawn into you (profits, fun clients, interesting work, accomplishment, friends, respect….) when you live your life recognizing the validity of the Law of Attraction (LOA).
It’s working in your life right now, always has been. Experiment. Write down three strengths that you are confident you have. One could be negotiating deals. Another could be listening carefully to clients. OK – now think of a few concrete things you can do this winter to enhance those wonderful skills.
Could be taking (or giving!) a class on negotiating – even attending a web seminar on your lunch hour. Could be reading business books about listening and underlining the passages that affect you.
Nurturing your strengths is useful and totally more effective than ruminating about your shortfalls. Be grateful for those strengths and watch them get stronger - Take a different approach this year.
Because people are attracted to competence and confidence, I say focus on your strengths, rather than your shortcomings. I say that for the same reason I say be an optimist instead of a pessimist. Because “what you focus on, expands.” So go with your strengths. Make their expansion a real habit. And believe in the Law of Attraction and this principle will bring you even more of your strengths.
The Law of Attraction is about manifesting. But so many people in business think it’s ‘woo woo’ stuff, definitely a bit ‘out there’. All this talk about the Universe and new age principles can certainly turn business people (guys especially) off.
But what if it were true? Wouldn’t you be missing out on a business lever of some major consequence? A huge opportunity for success? A new competitive edge? Again, be an optimist and give this concept a chance in your next 24 hours. What do you really have to lose especially if you’ve never done it?
OK, it’s not taught at Wharton or Kellogg but when the Universe asks “is that all you wanted” – you could now have a chance to boldly say, NO, I want more.
Here’s a fun mapping exercise, perfect to do in the first few weeks of a New Year.
Time Out Take yourself on a retreat. You don’t actually have to go to a resort or a B&B. Just set aside some undisturbed time in a quiet space at home one weekend to think about what you really want for your business. You won’t be writing a 3 year business plan, coming up with a ream of statistics, or charting anything at all on this solo retreat.
Instead, you’ll do these three simple and empowering things:
Get crystal CLEAR about what your deep dreams for the business are – no pessimistic thoughts, no lingering doubts Come to BELIEVE that the dreams are worth having and more importantly, can and will occur (instead of thinking they are ridiculous or impossible) PICTURE them happening in your mind’s eye – with as much texture and rich detail as possible (and don’t focus on HOW they will occur, that’s an unwelcome constraint in this process!) Now put on some background music for the active part of the Coach Nick Business Retreat. An accelerated learning technique I like to use in my sales workshops is called a ‘Vision Board’. With it you can put these very potent dreams down on paper and really get into them.
You’ll need:
White Poster Board (22x28) Glue Stick Scissors Magic Marker 10 Magazines An open mind & belief that you are creating your future Cut out pictures, symbols, words, headlines, letters, and quotes from the magazines which best represent the feeling that you got about your business dreams. If you get excited about an image, that’s the one to clip. Cut a slew of them out, maybe by category (work, home, family, sports, etc). Paste the pictures and words to the large poster board in any order and in any place that you feel is ‘right’. You can use the marker to write in any sayings, slogans, or thoughts that come to you while you are putting this board together. Date the Vision Board.
When you are done, you should feel great about having done this 2D declaration. It’s loaded with your enthusiasm and optimism. Share your ‘Vision Board’ with your family, friends, employees, vendors, etc. Put it up in a prominent place so you can see it daily. It will serve as a constant reminder of your goals, what’s important to you and where you are decidedly heading in 2007. And whenever you’re feeling a bit pessimistic, you can see the truth of your capabilities and the clarity of your vision staring right back at you.
It can be a ‘Coach on a Poster’ for the times you’re not talking to me!
Let the content (the picture and statements) on the ‘Vision Board” dictate your thoughts, feelings and actions in the present.
Basically, allow the future to be your compass so that you remain focused around the things that you want to create moving forward -- rather than worrying about the past.
Talk about a paradigm shift!
Yes, let the future dictate your thoughts, feelings and actions rather than having the past do that.
Hey, you might even take the Vision Board to a local quick printer and have it scanned or take a photo of it. That way you can have it right on your computer desktop at work to begin every day on a powerful and very personal note. One that’s awesomely POSITIVE!
Happy Selling & Leading in 2008
