When people talk about planning the trip of a lifetime, many talk about visiting Europe. When talking about Europe, people usually have a list of three countries that they want to visit. Most would want to visit Spain, Italy, and France. Interestingly though, of the three countries it is usually Italy that tops people’s list of the places they want to visit before they die. But one can ask what is it about Italy that makes it so inviting? Why are people so excited to visit a country that has not been a major center of world power for centuries?

The truth of the matter is that it Italy is interesting to millions because of the pivotal role that it has played in parts of history that have been important to Western society. When Rome was the power of the day, its influence spread over the entire world. Rome dictated language. Rome dictated culture. Rome dictated what was politically acceptable and what was not. During the first century, Rome was pivotal in the birth of Christianity. Many of the New Testament Biblical accounts center around Rome or on individuals who live or work in Rome.

For this reason, people are eager to visit Italy and to look at all of the ruins and all of the artifacts that are the remnants of the society that was the precursor to modern Western society. Additionally, for centuries Italy has been the center of the arts. When people think about some of the greatest works of arts that were ever created, they think about Italy. Artist that redefined the way that people thought about art and the way that they see art are from Italy.

Since the Vatican City is in Italy, and since the Catholic Church and Christianity has had such of an impact on the world as a whole, it is not surprising then that Italy is full of artwork, sculptures, and buildings that are of interest to millions.

Another reason why people are so excited to visit Italy is because Italy has so many beautiful cities. Each one of these cities has its own feel, is own architecture, and its own pivotal place in world history. Relatively small when compared to other countries, Italy is jam-packed with places of interest. For example, both the Coliseum and the leaning Tower of Pisa are in Italy. The Sistine Chapel and the Vatican are both within the borders of Italy. And these things just scratched the surface of the amazing works of arts, buildings, and bits of history that a visitor will be privy to when they visit Italy.

And of course there is the food. Italian food is renowned around the world for its amazing flavor and complex textures. Anyone who visits Italy is assured to go home at least 10 pounds heavier.
