All About GPRS Architecture and GPRS technology

by Sameer Mal

GPRS or General packet radio service is data service provided by all mobile service companies. This service enables you to use internet at any time and any place. You can start this by activating the GPRS service from your mobile operators and then can use to surf the internet. This comes as Value Added Services (VAS) from all these mobile operators. GPRS technology is considered to be faster than previous GSM technology. Many mobile service providers can give you up to 150 Kbps download speed on your mobile. This however depends on various factors such as strength of signal, mobile handset and use of the internet. GPRS technology is best suited to send or receive small set of data that includes e-mails, web browsing, MMS and various downloads. General packet radio service is supported by point to point protocol and internet protocol. GRPS on your mobile can be connected to your computer to use. There are various modes of connection. You can use Bluetooth, data cable or infrared technology to connect. Once you get connected to computer, you can browse the web, use SMS service, share your files and do many more things from computer. GPRS architect consist of two important network nodes that are added to existing GSM networks. These networks are called as Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). The main function of SGSN is packet data transfer and routing. Serving GPRS Support Node is therefore responsible for routing the packet data between the mobile stations. Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) is also called as GPRS backbone. GGSN acts as support between GPRS and external packet data network. In general cases, there can be many possible relationships between SGSN and GGSN. However, due to some constraints, mobile operators do not use all these connections. They may have only one GGSN and few SGSN connections. Depending on the mobile operator and the service a person is opting for, he can use various amount of data. Some recharges offer unlimited use of GPRS while others are restricted to amount of data that is been transferred to and from your mobile. Depending on the usage, a person can go for limited or unlimited plans of GPRS service. In today’s world, there are huge applications of GPRS. You can enjoy chat with various users because of its connectivity with internet. You can also send visual and textual information and large amount of data including maps, graphs, diagrams and other valuable information. Mobile data sharing and remote collaborative working on documents and sheets enables user to be updated at any place and at any time. Some applications also allow monitoring home automation processes through GPRS. These devices can be addressed instructed for use. It can be seen that advancement from GSM setting to GPRS setting has helped many mobile users to communicate and stay connected in faster and more reliable way. GPRS technology has really proved to be a gift in mobile technology segment.
