Hypnosis is as Old as Man

by Milos Pesic

The history of hypnosis is as aged as the human lineage. Even the most primal natives were aware of this mind-blowing psychological demonstration, and it was utilized in the sorcerous occasions of their medicine men to bring up anxiety and strengthen confidence in the magic and the occult. With this sustained saga of magic and mysticism, it is not unexpected that the widespread public opinion toward hypnosis has been and still is one of hostility, misinterpretation and fear.

The early scientific beginnings in the analysis of hypnosis began with Anton Mesmer in 1775, from whose name originates the word mesmerism which is still in frequent usage. Mesmer's utilization of hypnosis launched with his invention that some types of medical patients were affected by arm stroking and sleep suggestions. Mesmer accredited these remedial aftereffects to the 'quality' of 'animal magnetism', and he invented a theory that animal magnetism was some strange and peculiar cosmic fluid with soothing attributes.

Notwithstanding Mesmer's excellent insightful expertise in clinical psychology, he had no vivid awareness of the psychological constitution of his therapy. Nevertheless, he healed so many patients with success on whom archaic medical procedures had failed. However, his radical behavior and mysterious peculiarity of his therapy brought him unjustly to notoriety despite the fact that many physicians often visited his clinic during the culmination of his success to study the most important lessons in the unknown art of psychotherapy, specifically, the importance of clinical psychology.

Since Mesmer there has been a succession of remarkable men who became interested in hypnosis and implemented it effectively in medical practice, entrusting it an increasingly more scientific groundwork and strength. Elliotson, the first man in England to make use of the stethoscope, got interested in hypnosis about 1817, used it intensely, and left brilliant reports of its sanative effect in specific cases. Esdaille, inspired by Elliotson's case reports, became an ardent advocate of mesmerism, as it was then referred to, and actually succeeded in interesting the British government in making a hospital in India, where he used it extensively on all categories of medical patients, leaving loads of exceptional transcripts of major and minor surgery achieved under hypnotic anesthesia.

The commencement of a psychological comprehension of the phenomenon began in 1841 with James Braid, initially an opponent and then later a most devoted researcher and supporter. It was he who conceived the expression hypnosis, recognized the psychological nature of hypnotic sleep, and interpreted many of its manifestations, inventing methods whereby to investigate their validity.
