Power Tools Are Our Friends, Well A Man's Anyway
Next to the knowledge of how to get a job done, a wide variety of power tools is the best collection to add to your do it yourself home arsenal. It's fairly easy to locate the information on how to get a job done but not quite as easy to use the wrong power tool for the job in the process.
In fact, using the wrong tool for a job can make it more expensive, frustrating and costly if the power tool breaks in the process. When man invented the power tool, he designed each one to be able to accomplish a certain type of job. If you are trying to cut a sheet of plywood with a power drill instead of a circular saw chances are it is going to take you a long time to get the job done and getting a straight edge will be completely impossible.
That's an extreme example but it illustrates the point of having the right power tools for the job. The plywood was cut but the power drill resulted in an undesirable result while wasting a lot of time and probably tested the user's sanity in the process. A better use of that power drill is to hang drywall, drive screws and treat it well by using it for what it was designed to do. It will react and perform much better when treating it with the respect that every power tool deserves.
Power drills should never be used to cut things but many people have tried to take them to the next level and perform tasks that they were never designed to do. Most uses of power tools are common sense and when you purchase the best tool for the task at hand it makes completing that project easier and quicker. If you aren't sure, ask a sales person when you go to buy the tool. Most are able to provide you with the information that you need on the correct tool for what you want to do.
Home remodelling and repair has become a quite popular way of being able to save money. This is one of the reasons that people are quick to try and use a power tool that they already have for the job that they should be using a completely different tool for. Newbie's to the DIY world are guilty of this too. They don't have the knowledge of what each power tool actually does so they try to guess with sometimes disastrous results.
Power tools are your friend. Treat them with respect and learn everything that you can about the tools that are already in your arsenal. For each job that you are starting, check your power tools first to make sure you have what you need to do the job correctly. Don't be the guy cutting a piece of plywood with a power drill. Instead be the guy that goes to buy the circular saw to make sure the job is done right and his power drill is ready when he really needs it.
