The Clothes Helped This Man

by Andrew Bui

When I go into a store I like to get what I'm there for and checkout. I keep a goal of staying focused in on what I need without wasting time looking at other items. The way I approach each trip is similar to a mission. I like to keep a good pace and make sure that I complete my task quickly. Last week my sister gave me a couple of Kohls coupons for some jeans and a new shirt. I guess she finally figured that I needed some motivation to get myself some better clothes.

My sister understands me well enough to recognize that I hold on to my money like I do an old pair of jeans. I can easily be content knowing that I have just a couple pairs of jeans to get me through the week. It seems my sister wasn't alone in noticing that I had been wearing the same clothes for awhile now. A few days ago I had been getting ready to go on a date that my best friend had hooked me up with. After noticing that I had on the same clothes he started making fun of me. It didn't just end with him. I could begin to tell that I was getting weird stares from some of the people I see often. It's not like me to even take the trouble to pay attention to what people are looking at. I typically figure that it is a good indicator that I better go home and take a good look in the mirror.

I just had a haircut so the only conclusion I could come to was that I had to get some new clothes. Right when I got out of my vehicle at the parking lot, my mind kicked into mission mode. I was going to find the exact same pair of jeans that I was already wearing. I don't even waste time to see if things fit. Shopping like this has its advantages. I always know that I'm going to be content with my purchase. Picking out a shirt wouldn't be too hard either. As long as it would fit me I was good to go. The more I looked around the store, the harder I thought about the date that I went on the other night. The woman was well dressed and I could tell she took greatcare of herself.

The date was really a lot of fun. We went bowling and had a couple of drinks. Then later, at the end of our night we agreed to meet up for a second date. Walking around the store I kept thinking about my date and my possible long-term girlfriend. The need to dress myself up a little better became more and more of a reality.

I didn't even know how to start shopping. It's not like I really even paid much attention to what people wore. A young girl that helped out at the store had to have seen my confusion. I bet I looked like a deer held in the headlights. The clerk helped point me toward what was trendy and popular.

Buying my new shirt and jeans didn't cost me near as much as I thought it would. My second date ended up going extremely well. When the she told me that I looked handsome, I almost fell of my chair. Then when I found out she wanted to see me again, I actually did fall. I played it off as if there was something slick on the floor. I doubt she believed me.
