How To Be SUPER Productive Every Day

You Can, If You Are Honest About the Time You Waste

by Brent Riggs

The most frequent question I get from people is, "How do you have time to do all that?" which is then often followed up in hushed whispers of "He must be a workaholic." The obvious implication is there's no way someone can accomplish a lot and still have a life.

That is just plain wrong, wrong, wrong!

What is my secret for accomplishing all the things that I do? I DON'T WASTE TIME! Yes, I have some lazy days. Once in a great while, I am tired, running on empty, and I just hit the wall. There are days when I get a butt-kickin' headache and can't get anything done. Then, every so often, I fall prey to that lazy-procrastinitis disease.

For the most part though, I don't waste time. I have something to read and study at almost every point of my day. While driving, I listen to something that furthers my goals and productivity. Often, even if the TV is on, I'm still reading or working on something.

"Then you truly are a workaholic!" No, I'm not. When I decide not to work, like when I'm spending time with my family, I don't work. I disengage from work and spend time with them. Plus, we don't waste away our time mesmerized by the one-eyed-brain-killer (that's the TV for those of you who are glued to the tube).

When I hear someone say, "I just don't have time to... [choose one: start a business, write an article, create a product, manage a blog, read my Bible, spend time with my family, help others...]", a little further investigation reveals the same thing 99.9% of the time. They have plenty of time to waste, just not "enough time" for anything worthwhile.

It is my opinion that the main culprit or time stealer today is PES (Passive Electronic Stimulation). I am not sure if that is a real term or not, but if it isn't, it should be. Plus, I don't want to have to type it over and over again!

So, what is this PES? It comes in many forms, but the most common are: TV, movies, electronic games, internet news sites, internet pornography sites, social internet sites, email, Instant Messaging, etc.

It would be adequate to stop the list right there because the two primary ways that people waste away their time are listed. They are television and internet.

I don't find one person out of 500 who says "I don't have time" and doesn't spend an hour or two or more A DAY watching electronic entertainment in some form or another; or they "surf" the internet or engage in something casual and non-productive on the computer. And that's the "productive" people! The unproductive people spend 4-10 hours or more A DAY in these activities. UNREAL!

Now that I've said that, if you want to spend your time in that way, that's okay. It's YOUR time. Just don't whine about not having enough time to pursue your personal and financial goals. Have the guts to say, "I am choosing to spend my time turning my brain into mush through passive electronic stimulation instead of accomplishing things that would benefit my family and myself." It's your life. Go ahead and spend time doing what you want to do, but be honest about it.

Look at the truth about what is really being said (Are you saying these things?)

-I don't have the time to start a home business and work towards financial freedom because there are 20 hours a week of football and golf that must be watched.

- I just do not have the time to study and educate myself about my business. I have Instant Messaging to do, email to check, and FaceBook to keep up with.

- It would be nice but I don't really have time to exercise or pray or go to church because I stay up until midnight every night watching movies, talk shows, or the news.

Based on what I've observed, I would estimate that disciplined people are probably wasters of 1-3 hours per day on PES. The average Joe may waste from 3-6 hours, while an astounding number of people throw away 5-10 hours a day engaged in passive electronic stimulation.

This doesn't even consider the effect of PES on the brain - the deterioration of cognitive skills, the inability to think abstractly, the decline of professional and personal communication. There are certainly other negatives that aren't even identified yet. Any business owner could attest to the fact that it is hard to find employees who can actually write and communicate well. That business owner knows that those skills are scarce today.

Now, I'm not a doctor or researcher, but my gut tells me that PES is primarily responsible for this dramatic decline in communication skills. I also believe that it has negatively impacted our country's productivity. It doesn't take a genius to observe these things because they are so evident in everyday society.

OK, so now what? I have written all of this to encourage you to honestly think about the PES in your life. Get away by yourself and take a good look at how much time you waste on these types of activities. Don't bother justifying or defending yourself. Just be honest.

After you've taken the time to look at it, think about what you could be accomplishing if you invested your PES time into something productive like pursing financial freedom or spiritual fulfillment. If, in the end, you still WANT to spend your time in that way, then go ahead. Do it. But, don't complain that you "don't have time" to overcome your obstacles and pursue your goals in life. The choice is up to you.

By the way, if you were wondering..reading this blog - http://www.gbrentriggs.com - doesn't count towards PES! :)
