Kitchen Fire Prevention

by Leo Nov

One of the most hazardous areas in your home is the kitchen, as it contains many hazards that can cause fires and burns.

There are a few rules you should follow to keep your kitchen hazard free. First, make sure to place a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Install and regularly maintain a smoke detector. Store your cleaning products and chemicals out of reach from children. Never leave fire or any other heat source unattended.

Stovetop and Oven Safety

It is important to thoroughly clean the oven and gas range often as to prevent grease and food from catching fire. Be cautious when you cook by keeping pot handles turned inward, away from the edge of the stove. It is also recommended not to wear long, loose sleeves that can hang over the stove while cooking. Always be sure to keep an eye on the oven when it is turned on.

Flammable fabrics such as towels, dishrags, and curtains should not be placed near a gas or electric range, and do not drape towels on or over the stove. Be very cautious when handling flammable liquids like gasoline and cleaning fluids. A small spark from the stove range is enough to ignite the vapors from these liquids.

Safely Using a Microwave

You should not assume that items heated in your microwave are not as hot or hazardous as the items heated in your oven. Regardless that the container does not heat, the food itself does and can be dangerous. All the microwave vents should be cleared of obstructions and there should be an adequate space for air circulation. Do not place foil or other metals in a microwave oven.

Appliance Safety

All appliances should that have been tested and certified by a recognized testing facility. Be cautious not to overload electrical outlets, and regularly check for worn or broken wiring. Appliance cords should be kept on the counter to prevent them from, accidentally, being pulled down.

Frying Safety

The best, and easiest, way to prevent a deep fry pan fire is to use a thermostat controlled fryer, and to not let fat and grease build up on the stove or pan.
