Media Industry - A generation of guys music denied
by Peter Fiasco
When examining the past 6 years in the music industry, their is a anomaly that doesn’t make any sort of sense? The music charts in particular. It seems that while global music sales have dipped with US CD sales in 2005 falling 3.5per cent year-over-year, according to Nielsen something important that has not been examined is collateral damage. The male 18-30 age group. What has this age group got to do with the music charts? Everything, they have not been represented for about 6 years now. While many of the young people in this age group are downloading music off the internet, their voices have not been heard into terms of their musical preferences. The music charts have been catered to a music level I call the "13 year old girl" class. This class has pushed American Idol and other related music sales to that demographic to the forefront of music sales unlike 6 years ago when other demographics would actually BUY cd's and push many artists higher in the music charts and more radio exposure. Taking Australia as an example who does not have such a large population as the US, it has been catastrophic in terms of representation of 18-30 male representation in the charts, they have been severely under represented in exposure and I am surprised the media which as mentioned in my previous blog, has not reported on important issues such as this. Many would blame these male p2p users forgo their rights to more choice by not buying music. This argument however is only correct on the basis if we demonstrate the fact that the current artists are a small reflection on the populations taste. However this is not the case, media has concluded the current CD sales are the true reflection of all demographics. I believe this area needs to be further examined, the assumption of the media and radio stations that the current music topping the charts is wrong. I am sure Sony, BMG, EMI to name a few know this all to well as the male 18-30 demographic have a large disposable income that they spend on technology. Ironically this has also seen the inversely proportional boom of Ipods and Mp3 players.I am not sure what the answer is, but i for one as a male in that age group am sick of the teen idol pop music being dominating the charts and radio play.
