Are you thinking about having new windows installed? <br/><br/> You may have decided to give your house a long awaited face-lift and have now decided to get new windows installed, but you are not sure who you should get to do it: Do you go for a large multi-regional company, or are you looking to go with a smaller local building firm? <br/><br/> There are, of course, concerns with using a smaller local firm: One such concern is: how do you avoid the dreaded Cowboy Builder who will come along and take your money and leave you with a substandard installation, or even leave the job undone. <br/><br/> Here are some helpful tips that will make it easy to choose the right Company or Person for the job. <br/><br/> • Ask your family or friends if they can recommend a good company or tradesman that you can use • Get at least 3 estimates from companies - remember to be clear about what you are looking for and ask for the quotation to be broken down: i.e. Cost of windows and labour; If there is a big difference between the quotes, try to find out why. • Try to use a tradesman or company that is a member of the Master Federation of Builders; although membership of this body does not guarantee quality of workmanship, it will give you a good indication of the competence and reliability of the individuals in question. • Ask the tradesman or company if they have any recent references and follow these up to determine their validity. • Take your time when deciding who to use: sometimes the cheaper option can turn out to be the more expensive choice if you have to get the job redone! • Ask if the work comes with any guarantees • Ask for a schedule of works i.e. When will the job be started and expected completion date <br/><br/> Here are some things that you should avoid doing when you have decided which company or tradesman to use: <br/><br/> • Do not pay the full balance up front; always negotiate a schedule of payments based upon the work that is done • Do not deal exclusively in cash, however if this unavoidable, always ensure that you get a receipt for each payment. • Do not change your mind half way through the project or add to the job once work has started; this will lead to extra costs which you may not have budgeted for and can result in time delays. <br/><br/> Although Cowboy Builders make up a small minority in the building industry it is always better to make sure that you protect yourself and your family; if you have never watched Cowboy Builders (which is hosted by Melinda Messenger & Dominic Littlewood), you should check out an episode to see the kind of devastation that is left behind by some of the worst Cowboy Builders in the country. <br/><br/> Do not be put off by having new Georgian Windows or Timber French Door fitted in your property as they can add character & charm to any environment. <br/><br/> <br/><br/> <br/><br/> <br/><br/>
