Mexican Food in a German Town

My family and I have been living in our current city for over a year now and have yet to discover many things about it. We've gotten many recommendations from a lot of new friends ranging from eating at Prime Steakhouses to Mexican food restaurants, as well seeing many interesting to places nearby. This past weekend, we finally decided to do both at the same time!

Our family of four ventured out into one of the smaller towns just outside of the city. We've heard about the German heritage in this quaint small city, so being of German descent we had to go take a look. The city was established in 1845 and was quickly settled by hundreds of immigrants from Germany. The land was adjacent to the freshwater Comal Springs, which was known as Las Fontanas when the Germans first arrived. The city is now flourishing and is famous for its many German-style festivals. The German heritage is evident everywhere you look. Street signs are mostly German names, architecture on some of the old buildings have Bavarian influence and there are a lot of German restaurants.

For fun, people here will float down the river, go to the local German-themed waterpark resort, eat at a lot of great restaurants, go swimming in the cold spring rivers throughout the city and attend the many festivals where they eat sausage and drink beer. In a German town like this, you'd think people would be raving about a certain German restaurant, but in fact, people here are going on about an Mexican restaurant that is supposed to serve authentic, great Mexican food at reasonable prices. After a long day of river fun and on the recommendation of many, this is where we decided to eat.

Instantly I realized why this place had become so popular. The decor screams old Mexico without it being cheesy. It was comfortable and clean and the staff was very welcoming. Come to find out that the owners had been in business for over 20 years and as their menu says, "...their passion for the industry continues to grow as they search ways to satisfy their guests". My satisfaction was about to be put to the test.

For an appetizer we ordered their house specialty, the stuff avocado bites. The avocados were stuffed with Monterrey jack cheese, a sliced torreado pepper and some chicken, then lightly deep fried to a golden brown. The avocados were divine, especially when dipped in the accompanying sauce. The outside was perfectly crunchy and the inside was soft and gooey from the cheese. For an entree, something authentic was in order, so street tacos were had. The amazing part of this place is the variety that they offer on their taco platters. One can of course get the standard beef, chicken or shrimp tacos like at most Mexican restaurants, but this place also offers roasted pork belly, carnitas, picadillo and chicken in mole sauce as options! As a family we decided to order several of each so that we could all try a bit of them all. This restaurant's focus on serving quality, great tasting, Mexican food at reasonable prices is clearly evident and I left perfectly content. They've certainly made coming to this little German town quite worth it just for the street tacos!

A big sausage and beer festival will be occurring next month and we're certainly going to try and come for it. We'll try the many beers they'll surely have for sale, but will hold off on the sausage in order to save room for the tacos at my new favorite Mexican Restaurant.
