Basic Yoga For Newbies

by Aubrey Reeves

Yoga is the practice of unifying the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is available to all ages and all fitness levels. Basic yoga for beginners is highly enjoyable and can introduce you to the many benefits of starting a regular yoga practice.

One of the fundamental properties of yoga is proper breathing and meditation. Learning proper breathing techniques is essential to beginning a yoga practice. The breath brings life into the body. As we learn to direct our breath, we learn how to move our body to the natural rhythms of life. Yoga supports this process and encourages mindful breathing techniques during practice. Meditation is also supported in a yoga practice. Learning how to meditate and choosing which meditation style works best for you is at the heart of beginning a yoga practice. Meditation is simply the art of achieving no thought and simply observing and being. Yoga supports meditation as a way to relax and strengthen mind, body, and spirit.

After breathing techniques and meditation have been understood, the yoga practice moves into the body through a series of asanas, or poses. These poses do not have to be complicated or cause strain. In fact, they should feel comfortable in the beginning. You are experiencing the process of movement and you do not want to strain your body. Learning proper technique is the first thing that should be done when beginning a yoga practice. Your yoga instructor will lead you through a variety of poses from standing poses to sitting poses, to inversions and balances, to twists, and even a few backbends to open your spine. At the end of class, your instructor will have you lie in corpse pose. Corpse pose is another world for resting pose as you allow the benefit of your practice to enter your mind and heart.

To prepare for the journey into the practice of yoga, you shoud start with an activewear that you can put on your body to insure you are comfortable and can move freely. Womens sportswear is available online and in stores which offer a variety of outfits to choose from. Buy yourself a new mat, a small towel, and water bottle, and a yoga bag so that you feel like you are prepared and ready to go. Starting a new practice can be intimidating, but once you begin to witness the benefits of yoga, you will become a dedicated student.
