Stop Smoking Now - The Consequences Of This Drug Addiction
If smoking cessation has been determined to be one of the most important steps we can make to better our lives, why is it so hard to do? Many of us have tried and failed, not once, not twice but maybe hundreds of times. The actual decision to try to stop smoking is not a difficult one to take for most of us, but it seems almost impossible to stick with any plan or new "regime." We feel that we are trying our best and may become extraordinarily frustrated, but nothing seems to help.
We know that our bodies are in many respects hard wired to react to the effects of certain drugs and stimuli. Sometimes this is a good thing and sometimes it's bad. We know that we have to strictly regulate intake of any drugs, especially those with addictive properties.
There are many different drugs with addictive properties and we know of the destruction that illegal narcotics can cause in society. We've all heard of and maybe know about some people who have had their lives turned upside down by recreational drugs such as cocaine or heroin and we don't need too much education to help us understand just how addictive and negative this can be.
Nevertheless, whilst there is a large social stigma attached to the use of street drugs, this is not so much the case when it comes to some of the most addictive drugs in the world, like alcohol and cigarettes.
It's so hard to quit smoking because of the presence of a specific drug called nicotine which is found naturally in the tobacco leaf. It doesn't take too long, unfortunately, for a person who gets into the habit of smoking to become physically and emotionally dependent on the drug. Anyone who has tried to give up smoking knows that there can be some very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms associated with your efforts, and as, truth be told, few of us are prepared inwardly or outwardly to deal with the symptoms, we usually fall back into that old habit.
Why is it so difficult to stop? It's probably a combination of both the physical dependency and the mental addiction. We get so used to the physical task of lighting up a cigarette, having something to hold and something to put in our mouths that this represents a habit in and of itself. The nicotine itself interacts with our systems to provide stimuli that the body gets used to and craves. Internally, you start to feel as if something is wrong if you don't have the presence of nicotine within.
You have to be able to come to terms with your problem and realise that it is a drug dependency, but you have to also understand the power of the human mind. If it's strong enough to cause all these negative issues through a perceived dependency, it can also be strong enough to overcome all those barriers that are in your way, as well.
