Wheatgrass At Home: What You Need To Know To Get Started

by Collin Harris

You have decided to add wheatgrass to your holistic health strategy, but where are you going to get a source of fresh wheatgrass year round? If you don't want to settle for powdered green substitute or frozen juice that is cost prohibitive, then stepping up to the plate and growing your own nutrient rich wheatgrass at home becomes your only option. Luckily, the process is not daunting. Follow these simple steps and you will soon have green grass blessing the inside of your home.

Simple Is Best

Making a process easier, even if it isn't complicated, is a closer step to comprehension and actually following through. This will be a quick and easy breeze through of the wheatgrass growing process to get you closer to growing green in your home.

The Big Picture And A Juicer

To get the green goodness stored in the fiber of the grass, you need a tool to separate the fiber and vitamin filled water; here's where the juicer comes into play. This is your tool to accomplish your mission. Most importantly, be certain the juicer you have or the one you are scoping out for juicing is able to juice greens and—specifically—wheatgrass efficiently. The majority of cheap juicers that are centrifugal in design cannot handle wheatgrass.

Get Started On The Right Foot With The Right Seed

Seed is a vital part of growing wheatgrass. So, with that in mind, search for seed that is organic. You want to get started on the right foot, and seed is the right foot. A standard, rectangular eleven by twenty one inch tray will need close to one and half to one and three quarters of a cup of seed.

All About The Trays

You have your seeds, so the next step is to get some black plastic trays that are about 11 x 21 inches and roughly 4" in depth. These can be purchased online, but keep in mind that the seeds need to be covered initially, so for every tray of wheatgrass you plan on growing, you will need two trays.

The Soil

Next, you want to purchase an organic potting soil and an azomite rock fertilizer to feed the seedlings. Mix some fertilizer in the soil, fill your tray with soil—not quite to the top, leave a small space so no soil spills over. Filling the soil up closer to the top—as opposed to what some books say—will give your seedlings more room to stretch their roots and will be easier when harvesting the grass when it is ready to be cut

Soaking And Spreading

Soaking consists of putting your seeds in water over night. After soaking, move the seed to a sprouting bag (you can also use cheesecloth) where it will stay for roughly 24 to 48 hours. During the sprouting, make sure you wet the seed, otherwise it will die. After sprouting, evenly spread the seed over the soil (make sure there is not too much seed pile up, but level spacing). Finally, place the extra tray cover over the seedlings—remember you don't have to cover the seeds with soil!

Maintenance

During the period the seedlings transform into grass, you want to make sure they get enough to drink. Not too much, but not too little, either. Make sure you keep your eye on the soil and keep it moist; this will keep your seedlings happy. Remove the cover tray after the grass has grown high enough to touch it .

Now's The Time For the Harvest

After roughly ten to fourteen days, you should be ready to harvest. It should be around 10" in height. Because the grass starts losing nutrients after it has been cut, make sure you juice ASAP.

The process of growing wheat grass at home is simple, economical, and a real benefit when it comes to being on the receiving end of the nutrient-rich goodness of a homemade green drink. Keep growing and drinking the green.
