4 Most Common Plumbing Problems In The Home
Plumbing is something that makes a house habitable. As much as you need a roof and windows, you need to have proper plumbing in and working properly in order to live comfortably. Without plumbing the house would be cold, would have no running water and nowhere where you could relieve yourself.

But assuming you actually have plumbing in your home already, what are the most common things that will go wrong with it that you will have to deal with, or get a plumber to come and deal with?

Boiler Not Working

Unfortunately the most common thing to go wrong with your plumbing is within your gas boiler, and therefore is something that you cannot fix yourself. Well, you could but it is really dangerous if you aren't qualified and could end up in a gas leak or even an explosion. The only thing you should ever do yourself is to re-pressurise the system. All this involves is turning a little knob on the boiler so that a gauge gets high enough, indicating that there is enough pressure for the system to work. You shouldn't do anything like this yourself though until you have been shown how to do it properly by a professional plumber.

Broken Toilet

Toilets are designed to be used a lot and are therefore relatively hard wearing. They do break quite often though and the most common thing to go is the handle. This normally only involves a reattaching the connection between the handle and the system inside the back of the toilet.

Blocked Drains

All manner of gunk gets chucked down drains and eventually they will get clogged. You can normally clear a drain with strong chemicals or even just a plunger: just stick the rubber end over the drain hole and plunge the plunger up and down to suck whatever is in there out. If that fails on something like a sink, there is normally access to the 'U' bend underneath that can be unscrewed to remove gunk by hand.

Dripping Tap

Luckily, that annoying 'tap tap tap' caused by a dripping tap can be stopped with a set of spanners and a bit of investigation of the pipes behind the sink/bath. All that is normally needed is to tighten the offending pipe attached to the tap, but in some cases it will be the rubber washer that needs replaced.

It is important never to do anything you are not fully capable of doing, as a flooded house will cost a lot more than a few hours of a plumbers time.
