Physical Therapy Assistants - The Need for Background and Credit Checks
Background and Credit Checks
Physical therapy assistants can find themselves in their patient's homes from time to time. They are given a certain level of trust as they have been selected and approved by the therapist, hospital, or treatment center that has employed them. Part of the reason that clients and therapists alike can know they are worthy of that trust is because each application attempting to get into a physical therapy assistants program must undergo a background check and a credit check. Many people attempting to start a career as a physical therapy assistant find the intrusion into their background as unjust. They feel like the school or program has no right to but their nose into the applicants past. One reason that background and credit checks are needed when it comes to people in the physical therapy field is because some of the clients these therapists and therapists' assistants work with are unable to protect themselves. The therapy team is there at the injured individual's home and that individual has the right to know the background of their medical team is crime free.
Would you want someone that was convicted of a crime at your parents or your child's home working to make them feel better or gain further mobility? There is no way to be sure of anyone's background without checking it out. Let us face it; some people will simply lie if the background is not verified. You are paying enough for a physical therapist and physical therapy assistants to warrant the intrusion to their lives to be sure you are not dealing with a criminal or a person with extremely poor credit. All applicants must pass both screenings in order to be accepted into any physical therapy or physical therapy assistant program. Some applicants have asked application departments at accredited schools which is more important, the background check or the credit check. In all honesty, they are both equally important. They show the total picture of whether or not an individual deserves the amount of trust a patient must have in their therapist or that therapist's assistant. If you are entering school to become any member of a physical therapy team, expect the checks into your background and your credit. If you have something to hide, you may want to contact the school and be honest. Tell them you are interested in attending the classes to be physical therapy assistants and you do have a past. If you are upfront with them, they will usually let you know if you will qualify for their program prior to you submitting your application or your application fee.
