Soft Adventuring In Patagonia

by Terry Philips

When it comes to world adventure, and unspoiled lands you don't get much more awe-inspiring than the wilderness of Patagonia. Sat in the southern region of Chile and into Argentina, there is a special bond between this place and adventurers. So, if you're after thriving settler communities, glacier-topped mountains or crystal lakes in wild grassland then a trip here is something that is sure to capture your imagination.

Although still an undoubted wilderness, there are several outposts of civilization dotted throughout Patagonia, from where it is easy to embark upon various outdoor activities and soft adventure tours such as day hikes and longer treks across glaciers, horseback riding, canoeing, river rafting and sailing.

Whether you have a greater interest in wildlife or landscapes, or prefer an adventure that includes both, you won't lack for possibilities in Patagonia. Trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, horseback riding or any combination of these can be used as methods for exploring the region.

In the north of Patagonia, you will likely be traveling by land although white water rafting is a possibility in some areas. There are many different treks available, some of which span both Argentina and Chile while others focus on one or the other. In Chile, you will probably want to spend a fair amount of time hiking around the Torres del Paine National Park. It's possible to do this in the form of treks that last several days or, if you prefer, doing day hikes and avoiding camping.

There is so much wildlife to see around here, so when going south be sure to take to the water at some point to make the most of things. It's possible to tour the Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO world heritage site, by kayak. This is particularly advantageous during the Southern Hemisphere's spring when there is the most chance of viewing wildlife. You can't take boats with motors in the areas but kayaks are above board. Special permits are necessary in some of these areas to protect the wildlife and its habitat.

Combining boating with hiking where possible is also the best way to get a good view of the southernmost glaciers of Patagonia. When it comes to unique features, these probably top that list so don't miss out on the experience while in the area. The vistas that will become part of your memory aren't done justice simply with photos.

When it comes to trekking, there are not just different lengths of tours available, there are also ones available at different levels of difficulty. Be sure that you know what type of trek you are signing up for and that you are prepared. Be sure to note that turning back isn't always an option, especially if you choose a remote area.

Once you see how large Patagonia is and all the options you have in front of you, you may have a hard time making a choice among them all. The most important thing is to determine realistically how much time you have to spend and then make your plans so that you are not trying to fit too much into that time so that you don't end up disappointed.
