Different Strokes Used In Swedish Massage

by Sasha L. Scott

Swedish massage is probably the most popular type of massage today. A lot of people favors because it can greatly relieve muscle pains and muscle stiffness. However, these are not the only problems that Swedish massage can relieve. Swedish massage can also help the receiver achieve a sense of relaxation and calmness. Then, since massage promotes relaxation, it can greatly improve your mood. Also, massage promotes blood and lymphatic circulation. From this alone, you'll know that it can improve the function of your vital organs since it receives enough oxygen and nutrients. But how are these achieved? These are achieved because of the different types of strokes employed by a massage therapist. So there are basically four types of strokes being used in Swedish massage.

So you must understand that Swedish massage makes use of soft but long kneading strokes. Not only that, rhythmic tapping strokes are also employed. Rhythmic strokes are usually employed on the topmost layers of your muscles. These strokes are coupled with slow and careful movements of your joints.

But allow me to be more specific. Let me discuss with you the 4 common strokes that are employed by therapists in a Swedish massage:

First we have Effleurage. Effleurage is used to relax and soften your soft tissues. These are smooth and gliding strokes. Secondly, we have petrissage. The therapist usually squeezes, rolls and kneads your muscles to untie the knots that have been building there. It's a very relaxing and calming feeling. The third stroke is called Friction. The therapist makes circular movements on your skin. So basically, they rub their hands against your skin using deep and circular movements. What is the purpose of this type of stroke? This type of stroke is responsible for improving or increasing blood circulation. The last stroke is tapotement. Remember the light and rhythmic tapping I mentioned above? This is it; it called tapotement. The therapist may use his or her hands, fingers or the edge of their hand.

So these are the different types of strokes employed in Swedish massage. The therapist performs these strokes carefully so as not to cause any kind of discomfort or pain on the receiver. If you do feel pain, you can always inform the therapist to lessen the pressure. He or she will be most willing to comply since your comfort and experience is of utmost importance. So the next time you get a massage, try to notice the different strokes that your therapist makes use of. It's going to be fun and interesting.
