A Look At Social Conscience

by Robert Craig

I read an article on social conscience a short while ago. My mind began working through actions that might change the way our world is evolving. From what I gather, Keith Raniere of NXIVM says that in order to develop methods to help improve the human condition, we must cultivate a social conscience.

Almost all people possess a conscience, or the inner voice that gives them the ability to differentiate between wrong and right. In my opinion, a social conscience means how a society as a whole sees good and bad. Despite the fact that not everyone agrees on what constitutes right or wrong, there are popular thoughts that a big percentage of people consider sufficiently acceptable to live their lives by.

Many issues of our world today can be traced back to a fragile social consciousness. Our lack of consideration for the affect we have on those around us stems from the fact that we sometimes use others for our own benefit. If we want to alter the course of events, and effectively manage some of the world's problems, we will need to develop a sense of social conscience.

How will we make this happen? Outside influences early in our lives can create a conscience in a person, as well as shape the way we view ourselves. Development in social consciousness in societies can be brought about by helping leaders and parents to instill good individual ethics and morals in our children and each other. There are organizations, like NXIVM and Executive Success Programs, that dig deep into the structure of what makes up our ethics and helps people evaluate that for themselves.

Individuals can learn to view themselves in a positive light by seeking out self-esteem programs. This can be useful in youngsters as they are developing a sense of who they are. Maybe we can also make it a point to support ethical businesses. Are there any such businesses in your own city or town? Is it possible that the more we uphold the ideals and values we have - and the people and businesses that have them too - the more we can aid in building a greater sense of social conscience? By taking action-whether it be through funding positive programs or simply teaching ethics in our homes- we can improve social consciousness.
