Whether it is something that we see on the television, hear on the radio, or notice on a billboard - we also have our least favourite ads too!

This article will look at some of the good, the bad and the ugly, among prominent ad campaigns of the last 50 years.

The Good

'Tetley Tea Folk'

In 1973 Tetley Tea introduced us to the Tetley tea folk: these were animated characters that consisted of: 'Gaffer', 'Sydney', 'Maurice', 'Clarenze', 'Gordon', 'Tina' and 'Archie';

These loveable cartoons brought us some famous tag lines, such as: 'Tetley Make Tea Bags make Tea', 'That's Better, That's Tetley' and 'Only Tetley will do'.

So popular were the tea folk that Tetley introduced their own Tetley tea folk merchandising, which had us all buying Tetley Tea Bags, just so that we could complete our teaspoon or mug collections.

In 2001, Tetley decided to change their advertising strategy to try and attract the younger tea drinker: I still do not understand to this day why this is…I was only 5 when these ads hit our screens and I drink tea!

On the 30th June 2010, Tetley announced the return of the Tetley 'tea folk': The first new TV ad featuring these long-missed characters was broadcast on the 20th September 2010; this advert seen them waking from a 10 year sleep.

Old Spice

The advertising campaign that brought you the tag line: 'The Man your Man Could Smell Like' had women going out and buying their husband or partner Old Spice for Christmas and had every growing boy trying to reach their Dad's bottle of Old Spice from the bathroom counter!

Of course, this did fall out of fashion and soon became the unwanted gift from your mother in law!

Although recent campaigns have begun to try and make Old Spice fashionable again, there is a lot more competition out there these days.

'Hello Boys'

In 1994 the male population was introduced to Eva Herzigova on a giant billboard, advertising 'Wonderbra'…

Wearing nothing more than the aforementioned 'Wonderbra' and briefs in a pose which seen Eva looking down at her chest, the campaign itself made millions of men weak at the knees; It was also blamed for stopping traffic and causing accidents, as commuters stared at the huge roadside posters!

The ad succeeded in sending red-blooded men running to their local lingerie stores to buy their wife or girlfriend a Wonderbra!

In 2011 this billboard was voted the most iconic ad image of all time

The Bad

Sheila's Wheels

In 2005, we were introduced to Sheila's Wheels…

This was an advertising campaign designed to sell car insurance to female drivers - the kitsch TV adverts featured three 'Sheilas' singing about 'bonza deals' and striking dramatic poses (even forming a human pyramid at one point!) from the back of a bright pink convertible…

Whilst their jingle was pretty catchy, it could also start to grate after repeated viewings during a nights' TV programming.

Gillette

This company is responsible for bringing three of the biggest sports stars together for an advertising campaign: Thierry Henry, Tiger Woods & Rodger Federer…you would think that this would be an awesome team-up…but then you'd be wrong!

These stars should have stuck to their day jobs, because acting is simply not for them!

The Ugly

Go Compare

This set of ads is fast becoming the most annoying thing on television today!

This TV advert introduced us to 'Gio the Opera singer', who is responsible for singing the most annoying song I have ever heard!

Thankfully, it seems, Go Compare have now tired of this particular advertising campaign - the latest in their long list of adverts is fast becoming my personal favourite, since it depicts a satisfying scene…Sue Barker, firing a rocket at Gio!

We all walk past Promotional Banners and Exhibition Displays every day and there is a good chance from time to time you will stop to look at something that catches your eye.
