How to Travel from Bangalore to Pondicherry
Bangalore (or Bengaluru as it is called these days) is famous as ‘Garden City’ and ‘Pensioner's Paradise’. Located on the Deccan Plateau, this capital city of Karnataka is India's third most populous city. Bangalore is famous all over the world as the hub of India's information technology sector and is increasingly referred to as ‘The Silicon Valley of India’. Pondicherry (currently called Puducherry) was the largest French colony in India during the past. The city boasts of an extensive and appealing history of trade, commerce and war. The strong French connection of Pondicherry is evident even today. The distinctive French influence on the city becomes evident when one see the Rues and Boulevards lined with Mediterranean style strength houses and bakeries, especially in the old quarters of Pondicherry. French is still followed in Pondicherry and it is the perfect example of the amicable convergence of the East and West. Pondicherry is also known as the French Riviera of the East (La Côte d'Azur de l'Est). Though nestled deep inside the state of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry is entirely different from Tamil Nadu in its culture and architecture. Pondicherry showcases the elegant French architecture and French way of life. Pondicherry is located at a distance of about 320 kilometers from Bangalore. The best way to travel to Pondicherry from Bangalore is by road. Proceeding through the National Highway 66 (NH-66) till Krishnagiri, and taking a right off the main highway (there are signs boards indicating the route) from the National Highway 7 (NH-7), one can easily reach from Bangalore to Pondicherry. Some important places en-route Pondicherry is Gingee and Tindivanam, Tiruvannamalai, Chengam and Uthangarai. One can travel to Pondicherry either through Tindivanam (via Gingee) or Villupuram (via Thirukovilur). Gingee fort, an Archealogical survey of India (ASI) Heritage site, is on the way to Tindivanam and is worth a visit. The time taken to travel from Bangalore to Pondicherry is around 5-6 hours. It is advisable to carry some food as there are not many good eating options en-route Pondicherry. Only one train, the Yesvantpur Express (12256), directly connect Bangalore to Pondicherry. The total running time is around 10 hours. Online booking of train tickets is also possible. Though Pondicherry has an airport, it does not offer services for the general public. Apart from this, bus services offer a viable option for people who wish to travel between the two cities. The bus fare would vary depending upon the type of bus chosen and the amenities offered. People travelling with family or in groups can go for taxi services to travel from Bangalore to Pondicherry. Taxis are available to Pondicherry from Bangalore for a fare to the upwards of INR 7000/- (for a round trip).
