How One Gynecologist Came Close to Killing My Wife, Then Blamed It On Her!
Don't Let This Happen to You
Sometimes eating healthy may not be enough to prevent all of our health problems. That’s just the nature of the world we live in. What others do can have grave impacts on our health, and sometimes there is very little we can do about it.
As I write this article, I am still reeling from the stress of the past two days. On Monday, Harriet, my wife and I spent all day at Immediate Care. There they ran several tests, including a CAT Scan, to determine the source of the acute pain Harriet began having around 5:30 AM. This was her second time having this kind of pain except that it was more severe this time. She could hardly stand or walk, just writhing in pain.
Harriet had a similar pain attack in 2005, and I rushed her to the ER. At the time test results reveal a fluid buildup in the area of her Caesarean Section for the delivery of Favor, our third child, born 10/20/2006. Two weeks after Favor’s birth, pus started flowing from Harriet’s surgical wound just below her umbilical cord. The sight looked scary. But when Harriet went to her gynecologist, he casually made some jokes and told her, “Just put soap and water on it. Keep it clean. It’s nothing to worry about.” How we wish he had taken a more professional approach and looked more closely to see if something about the surgery needed to be corrected immediately.
So these last 22 months, Harriet has had pains on and off in that same area. Every time the problem has been treated with antibiotic and pain medication. Then when Immediate Care sent the results of the latest CAT Scan to the gynecologist, he scheduled Harriet for Outpatient Surgery the same day. The surgery lasted around four hours. It was the most stressful time of my life concerning Harriet’s health. One hour into the surgery the doctor called to tell me, “We’re taking everything out, if you want her come out of this alive!” The infection had spread to all of Harriet’s reproductive organs along with her appendix. The doctor even said, “We’ll keep an eye on the gall bladder. It could be next.”
Thus our lives were changed just like that.
After the operation, I stood in front of the gynecologist and asked, hoping he would at least take some ownership of the surgical blunder or post-surgery negligence that led to this, “What caused this infection?” Do you know what his reply was, to match the obvious arrogance in his face and voice? “I have no idea!”
At this point, we are not sure what medications will be prescribed for my 37-year-old wife to help balance her hormones. Unsettling still is what the side effects of those drugs might be on her long term health, not to mention the cost of this surgery and ongoing prescriptions.
Where do we go from here? Big question. No answers right now. All I can say is, “I feel something drastic has changed about my wife’s health. Hopefully there will be a miracle to minimize the impact of the hysterectomy on her quality of life. I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about what to do about the gynecologist, if anything.” Any ideas?
There have been some bright spots in this ordeal. Our friends from Church for All were right there at the hospital. Most of them remained throughout the long operation. Others called, pledging their prayer support. Thankfully, God must be answering their prayers already. Harriet stood in front of the mirror on the 6th floor of Owensboro Medical Health Systems to brush her own teeth. Then she sat for a quite a while to watch one of her favorite shows on TV. Her voice is strong. She’s already started issuing several commands, instructing me to do this or get that.
In the next article, I will outline ten key mistakes we made about choosing and remaining with this doctor, whom many know as one of the most experienced in our city. Learn from our costly mistakes to avoid yours.
