Running Tips - Barefoot Running
There are many runners who have taken to running barefoot. This is one subject that there seems to be no middle ground. Runners are either totally for it or totally against it. Some claim that studies have shown that going barefoot can actually reduce risk of injury and can increase your efficiency. Then there are those that say that proper shoes are what keep you on the roads injury free. Read on for pros and cons of barefoot running.
The proponents of barefoot running say that it may help you run more naturally and actually strengthen the foot. They say that it will help the muscles, tendons and ligaments stay strong. Those for running without shoes also say that it will help you to learn to run more efficiency by landing on your forefoot - rather than landing on you heel. They say that the most efficient runners are forefoot strikers. Also on their list of advantages of running barefoot is that you will have improved balance when you run.
Then there are those that say that barefoot running is actually bad for you. A huge concern of mine is what you may run through as you run barefoot. Shoes will protect your feet from rocks, glass or anything else that may be on the road. And, also, what about running barefoot in colder weather?
Those against barefoot running also remind us that the bottom of your feet is a soft area. If you run without shoes, you may actually cause pain in that area. So, those plantar fasciitis could become a problem if you run without shoes.
Barefoot running has caused a new wave of shoes to be manufactured that are called minimalist shoes. These shoes are made with limited cushioning, but they do have some sole protection to keep your feet protected from what you may run through. There are some models that actually have spaces for your toes.
As with everything - there are pros and cons of barefoot running. I know that personally, I like the protection of my shoes. But, I keep an open mind for those that like to run shoeless. However, if you do decide that barefoot running is for you - go into it gradually. Don't just throw away your shoes and go for a 10 mile run. Your feet need to adjust to their new running routine. As with increasing mileage when you start running - the same goes for running barefoot.
