On the other hand, phasic muscles are sprinters. They function in short bursts of speed to accomplish tasks like lifting our arms and legs, or turning our head.
This is a bit of a simplification because all muscles perform a combination of both functions, however its important to understand the principle behind each functiion.
The human body was designed and constructed for movement. For centuries, that fact served us well. However things have changed in our high-tech world today. Today we sit hour upon hour with our eyes fixed on a two dimensional screen while our fingers perform very rapid alternating movements. On top of that, we spend many, many evenings sitting in front of the TV.
The human body was not designed for this excessive sedentary lifestyle. Or, maybe I should say, we are just beginning to learn how to adapt our bodies to the new stresses this sedentary lifestyle places on our bodies.
Without understanding how our bodies work and what they were designed for, we have unconsciously started using certain muscles for tasks they were not designed to perform.
For example, in our sedentary society, many people are sitting incorrectly and unknowingly employing postural muscles that were designed to support us in an upright posture. Another problem today stemming from our lack of knowledge concerning the mechanics of our bodies is simple lifting. Again, most people unknowingly employ incorrect mechanics when lifting, even light objects, or when making simple movements in general.
These misuses of our bodies are manifest in sharp back pain, right side back pain, low right side back pain, lower hip and back pain, and many other symptoms.
Yet, it's amazing how fast these pains are eliminated when people understand and put into action proper natural movement mechanics when sitting, lifting, moving, and even sleeping.
