Up in the downeast on the front side of the backwoods
One thing that remained a constant throughout my life as a boy, growing up in Porter Maine and the towns surrounding it, was Brook trout and brook fishing. Brook trout don’t really get too big in the smaller streams up in the mountains but they are the most wonderfully flavored fish in the world after you have followed a brook for 4 miles crawling through brush, fighting off mosquitoes and picking off wood ticks. Many fishermen struggle to find and catch brook trout. Out in the countryside of Maine it rather becomes second nature to catch the skittish little fish. First thing you need to do is go digging around in your shed or garage where you keep your fishing gear. Find your net, fly rod, hooks, reels, chest waders, hip waders, fish basket, multitude of legendary flies, your expensive L.L. Bean canoe, paddles, floatation devices, fishing hat, sun glasses, fingerless gloves (Why did you buy those anyway?) and whatever other gear you think you might need. Take a good look at it and remember where it all is. You can breathe easy now, you haven’t been robbed…. Except by Beans. Leave everything right where it is you don’t need any of it. The following is an essential list of brook fishing gear that will help you catch those sweet little dandies out in the woods of Maine.
