What is Depression and How Common Is It?

What is depression? Researchers and health professionals believe that when the two chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine are out of whack or there is a imbalance that this is what causes depression, a chemical imbalance. Serotonin and norepinephrine are linked to mood and keeping feelings of pain in check. When these two chemicals are out of balance then the effects we feel are both mood (on an emotional level) and we can feel physically pain, which is what makes of depression.

Depression is common and affects about 122 million people worldwide. The effects do not discriminate, a specific gender, race is not more prone to clinical depression more so than another. It can strike anyone and if it is left uncared for it can spill over into all aspects of our lives, into our relationships, home life and work.

The sad truth is that many people with depression do not seek treatment, mainly because the worry or put to much weight into what other people will think of them. Depression is a medical condition, here are just a few points to be aware of:

Today day depression is one of the leading causes of disability

Women are approximately twice as likely as men to be afflicted with depression

People who have a family history of depression may be more likely to be to hit with depression

Anyone with some form of chronic or debilitating medical condition can also be more prone to depression

Major changes in lifestyle such as, becoming a new mom (known as postpartum depression in women), are more at risk of developing depression

Depression doesn't only affect the person who has it. Its effects spill over to that person's family, friends and even coworkers. These people feel the pain and see how depression affects their love one. If you suffer from depression the biggest thing you need to understand is that depression is NOT a personal sign of weakness. Depression doesn't discriminate. If you know someone who is afflicted or if you are yourself, do the best thing that you can possibly do for yourself ... seek help from your Doctor.
