Special Considerations at Halloween

Halloween is a very fun, exciting holiday. However, it is also, sadly, one of the most abused holidays of the year. Many things have changed about the holiday, but some have stayed just the way they always were. What has changed has done so for the better. What has not changed, however, is all of the ill-intended behavior of certain people who would ruin your fun without a second thought. Awareness has risen, thankfully, and that's why so many changes in the traditions of Halloween have come about.

Now you will find a whole lot less of the traditional trick-or-treating than you used to. Instead, families head to the local mall or other central location for their trick-or-treating. And parties have become a more popular choice for the very same reason. Rather than taking any risks, parents are now wise to keep their kids well out of harm's way.

Awareness to so many things is increasing, primarily because it is so much easier now than ever before to spread the word about what is out there. Medical information is among the most popular subjects spread by e-mail and other media. A lot of things you may have never known existed are now part of your daily life. This includes things such as food allergies, like the often mentioned allergies children have to nuts, and also to other medically sensitive conditions such as diabetes. It is important to know about these issues, and it is even more important to know which children have which condition. This may sound a little extreme, but it's not. Rather, it is responsible to make sure that no child is put at risk of any food danger. With all the candy of the holiday, it's very possible for your kids to get into something that may not be good for them.

On the subject of your own kids, take a minute or two to think about how to inform everyone of your child's condition, assuming there is one. Be sure to talk with your kids about what kinds of foods, candies especially, they are permitted to have, and also which ones they are not permitted to have. Tell them how to politely refuse the offer of something they are not allowed to eat. Also, be sure to teach them a little extra about such conditions so they will be more aware and more able to help other kids. Furthermore, it is to your credit that your kids have expressed sensitivity to others with medical conditions. The only way this can happen is if you've taught them, and others will definitely take notice.

It's also becoming less popular in some areas to wear scary costumes. That's why such costumes as princesses, movie characters, and the ever-popular fairy costume are classic good choices. Halloween doesn't have to be scary to be fun. So if you're thinking of making your child into a fairy this year, you'll find the fairy dress, fairy wings, and all the other items you'll need.

Remember, Halloween is about fun. Do your part to keep it safe, friendly, fun, and maybe a little less scary.
