Fix Your PC By Yourself

by Tomer Harel

Most everyone has a computer these days. While it's great that more and more people are launching into the world of technology, it does present a problem for some people. As with any other type of machinery, computers can have problems. There are many websites on this issue. However, it might be helpful to list some basic steps as to how you can fix your computer by yourself, without needing to call in a technician.

1) Fix common error messages. If you are a Windows user, you may notice that you will occasionally get an error message. These errors are quite common so don't become worried. However, since every error message is different, you may need to do some research on the particular message you are receiving in order to know how to fix the problem.

2) Reverse your damages. We all make mistakes and it seems that it's particularly easy to make computer errors. Therefore, Windows has given you some tools to help you correct the mistakes you have made. One is booting up with the last known good configuration. This will erase any recent changes that were made to your computer. Another help is system restore which will take your computer back to previous settings and may erase the damage. A file recovery program can restore files that may have been erased and a system file checker will help restore important files.

3) Defragment your hard drive. This sounds complicated, but it's very easy. This helpful option is in your control panel. Defragmenting your data means putting it into order again. Rather than scattered pieces of programs and files all over your computer's hard drive, defragmenting will put everything back into its proper place.

4) Empty your recycle bin. While that may sound obvious, it's amazing how much junk people keep in their recycle bin. Some people actually use their recycle bin as a storage area for pictures and documents that they may need later. That is not wise. The files in your recycle bin just take up extra space on your computer. Delete it regularly to keep your computer running up to its best possible speed and performance.

5) Repair and reinstall Windows. Microsoft provided some invaluable tools into their operating systems. Recovery console, safe mode and startup repair are some of the tools that are given to you. These tools can help get your computer running smoothly again and get you back on track. Of course, there is always the option to completely reinstall Windows. It's important to back up your files, documents, pictures and music as they will be lost if you do a full reinstallation.

It may seem scary to work on your own computer. However, Windows has made it quite simple to do some easy repairs. Due to the many tools now available through the Windows operating systems, it's highly unlikely that you will damage your pc. Of course, there are always repair programs and technicians to help us with the really tough problems if we need them. You can begin using some of these basic tools that will help you get your PC cleaned up and running more smoothly!
