What Can Lorry Drivers Do To Help The Environment

Long distance lorry drivers are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to the environment, because aside from planes they are one of the biggest polluters on the road. They are also totally crucial for the UK's infrastructure so have to hit the road every day no matter how much CO2 they churn out. Plus…it's their job.

There are a number of things they can do though that will reduce their impact on the environment making the planet, activists and them happier.

Environmentally Friendly Trucks

The most obvious thing they can do is to make sure that they always have their truck either in absolutely optimum condition or that they have a truck that is as advanced environmentally as possible. This might be one that runs on electricity at certain speeds, that is as light as possible, or even one that runs on alternative fuels. It's probably easier for most truck drivers just to ensure that their tyres and fuel system are in tip top condition.

Drive Conservatively

The main thing a driver can do aside from chemical or mechanical things is to make sure they always drive as conservatively as possible. This involves avoiding accelerating too fast (this is when most fuel is wasted), avoiding accelerating when there are red lights in the distance (no point in hurrying to just have to slow down again), and always changing gear as smoothly as possible so the engine doesn't have to work as hard (uses more fuel).

Efficient Routes

Another thing the driver can do is to make sure that they take the most efficient route possible by making sure it is as short as possible, while ideally avoiding traffic lights and other road sections that require them to stop and start again. Most logistics software can help with this.

Consolidate Loads

If it is possible to take more than one load and cut down the amount of time or the distance certain goods have to travel, companies should always try and make this happen. Relaxing delivery times and partnering with other haulage firms can help with this.

Encourage Rail and Canal Use

Haulage companies can also make the decision to encourage the use of rail and canal networks to deliver goods. This may take a lot of trucks off the road but with the use of logistics software and advanced supply chain software it will make a big difference to the environment. Can't see too many drivers being happy about it though.
