This career is not entirely new, it has been an established field in healthcare facilities but it is not until recently when a need for such professionals arises. Nursing informatics is a mixture of both the clinical aspect of nursing and the field of information technology. Most hospitals rely on the use of computer programs for different purposes, be it for diagnostics, clinical exams, or treatment. Along with this is important patient information that should be handled and kept confidential. Professionals in the field of nursing informatics are assigned to design a computer system that can handle the operations of the medical facility. Individuals that are hired for this position are expected to perform the following tasks:

1. Organize and maintain all pertinent data related to nursing. 2. Be in charge of communicating such information to designated parties for decision making. 3. Ensure that every step of the computerized documentation procedures was performed correctly in order to provide a better quality of service to patients.

When fully implemented expect that it can provide healthcare facilities with a number of benefits such as decrease in the number of errors in data input, increase in the productivity of nurses, provide easy access to information, and minimized cost of manual labor. Though it may require additional studies in order to get familiar with computer procedures and practices, this is a good way for professionals to stay on top of the game.
