The Basics of Search Engine Optimization for PI's

by Paul Beauchemin

When it comes to creating a website that people will want to visit, it all begins with search engine optimization or SEO. Keep reading to find out some of the basics of the process that could be used to catapult your website to the first page of search engine results.

What's the Point of Search Engine Optimization?

If you've ever done a search using any search engine, then you know how many pages of results are returned for the keywords that you enter into that little box. It ranges in the millions. Basically, most searchers don't venture beyond the first or second page of search results. You'd be extremely lucky if they clicked on page 3.

What that means for your private investigation website is that if it is not found on page 1, then chances are the traffic that you want won't find you. Traffic can be gained through word-of-mouth advertising and links on social media sites but the bulk of the traffic won't come past your door unless you do something to make them notice you. That is where search engine optimization comes in.

SEO takes into account what search engines are looking for when they rank websites according to the keywords that users enter into their search box. For example, as a private investigator, what keywords would you expect your potential clients to enter in order to find you? What keywords would you use if you were looking for a private eye?

These are the keywords that need to be featured on your site. When they are found in the right places (we'll discuss that in a minute), search engine bots and spiders can find them and rank your site appropriately for those words. Now, potential clients can find you and/or your agency easier.

Some Search Engine Optimization Tips

Here are a few things to consider when crafting your business website.

1.Monitor your efforts - Use analytical tools to determine how much traffic is being brought in with the keywords that you are currently using. Keyword tools can help you determine which keywords and phrases have the least competition so you can exploit them for your site.

2.Use relevant keywords - This links in with the first tip. Whatever keywords you employ, make them relevant to your business niche. For instance, if your agency investigates domestic cases, then using phrases that relate to "corporate espionage" or "identity theft" won't bring you the clients you need.

3.Create useful links - Whenever you are on social media or write an article for another site, always create a link to your website. Even in newer content, link back to archived articles to get people searching all over your site. Just like this article is linked backed to my website, your articles should be as well.

4.Use a sitemap - When people don't know where to go on your site, they will look at the bottom of the page for a link to a sitemap. It offers links to every page on your site.

5.Change URLs - Want to be easier to find? Change those numbers that are assigned to page links on your site to include keywords that let people know just what they will find if they visit that particular page.

Search engine optimization is important for every website to gain traffic.
