Why You Need To Stop Water Damage Before Its Too Late

by John Walters

We live in a world where the weather is constantly changing and storms are becoming more damaging. One of the biggest ways of getting water damage is from the simple act of rain. As rain water finds its way back to the ocean, rivers or lakes, it first finds its way through obstacles, such as your house.

One of the easiest ways to prevent water damage, especially in cities that get a lot or rain (Seattle), is to have gutters. Most people will not realize that gutters actually save their home from water damage, from allowing water to seep into the basement or crawl space. Gutters not only gather the rainwater in one location but also push the water away from the house, from the foundation. In places where it rains a lot, this is especially important. Newer homes are also being built higher than the surrounding area. If you are looking for a home, always look for the homes that are built at least a few feet higher than the road. You want your driveway to be pointed down a small hill. Houses that have their driveways pointing down towards the house are almost guaranteed to have water damage or water in their crawl spaces or around the foundation.

Why is it important to spot water damage early on?

If you do not spot water damage early on, then most likely the water has already damaged your house. Once water is sitting on wood or even the foundation of the house, it begins to wear down the sealants placed on that wood. The water will eventually eat away at the wood, causing mold and rot. Once this process starts, if you do not fix the problem right away, your entire foundation and structural stability of the building will be weakened.

Having water damage is a serious threat to the stability of any home or structure. No matter what you do, as soon as you see water in your basement or crawl space, its extremely important to call someone who can help fix that problem. By ignoring the water, it will cost you thousands more in the long run. Whether you plan on selling your house, you will have to get the problems fixed as any qualified home inspector can easily spot water damage.

Mold is also a health issue and where there is water, there will eventually be mold. Mold grows in moist conditions, so even if the water has dried up, most likely the surrounding area is still moist. This moist environment will help mold grow, which will not only damage your foundation, but any wood, walls or floors it grows on. Mold can be a serious health hazard to small children and even adults.

If you suspect you have water damage or mold issues, its important to get those problems fixed immediately. You can always hire a certified contractor to look at your problems and let you know what needs to be done. Its always best to get those problems fixed early on, rather than waiting until the problems become extremely hazardous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWmnfFBm9iE
