They are very helpful for transporting things such as groceries, firewood, laundry, books, and many other items that may cause stress on the homeowner when lifting and carrying up flights of stairs. The dumbwaiter is typically about two feet in square, however, larger models are being made that can carry larger items if needed. The square travels on the path of installation, either by electrical current or by manual operation, according to the homeowners choice. They travel at different speeds, although the standard is around 20 feet per minute. You can have them installed to make specific stops, if for instance you have more than two stories. A dumbwaiter installed in the basement, for example, can stop on the first floor or the second, whichever you need at a particular moment. The are operated by switches, much like elevators. You simply put into the dumbwaiter what you need to transport, hit the switch, and it will arrive safely and effectively on the floor that you need it taken to.

Dumbwaiters are an excellent device for those who are disabled, or for caretakers of disabled people, as they take the strain and stress off of some of the chores associated with daily needs.
