Boiler Installation and Safety Regulations

by Steven Magill

As much one should make sure the quality of the boiler unit he acquires, boiler installation is also about the qualification of the installer. Because of the delicate nature of the technology and the magnitude of catastrophe it can cause in wrongly installed, government regulations are quite strict licensing qualified boiler installers.

In the UK, boiler installers must be registered with CORGI or Council of Registered Gas Installers. Failure to do so would be a serious violation of gas safety regulations and could be mean serious penal consequence. Separately, technicians can also have themselves qualify as an oil-based boiler installer by registering on various professional private accrediting entities, which includes the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors, Ltd and Building Engineering Services Competence Accreditation, among others.

While the law has been clear and intent, CORGI acknowledge the existence of several unlicensed boiler installers in business offering lower fees but operating outside the careful standards set to ensure gas safety in a household, a building or a neighborhood community. The best that CORGI can do aside from direct apprehension is tell the public not risk their homes and community by contracting unqualified installers.

Only a CORGI registered boiler installer or a member of the CPS or Competent Persons Scheme will cause the issuance of Building Regulations Compliance Certificate to the boiler's owner. This certification is important not only because it is a proof of compliance, but also because it comes with your boiler unit if and when you will one day decide to sell it.

Anyone can always install their boilers using a qualified local firm. It is equally safe and much cheaper. However, it could also mean more background checking with the verifiable credentials of prospective firms.

It is in light of such reality that it is much safer and simpler to hire nationally established and qualified company specializing on the particular technology your new boiler use and the architecture necessary to put it functionally in place at your household or building. Very often, they offer a better, more comprehensive maintenance schemes.

There are a lot of companies and service firms that houses its own CORGI registered technicians and engineers. Choose the one you are most comfortable with, perhaps one which is recommended by someone you trust or has credible experience with. These entities will not only be competent in installing your units but will also be good sources of aftercare advice in maintain your system.

Boilers are both necessary and critical. This is why one must adhere to the highest standards when installing a new unit. Regulations are there precisely to ensure to public safety especially considering that fact that there are several non-licensed boiler installers out there who could be compromising that by doing business at the risk
