The Truth Behind Diamonds

After centuries of populace acceptance, the real story of the diamond industry comes to light. It is a tale of greed, power, desecration and death; one that still prevails because of the misconception that natural diamonds are rare gems worthy of their inflated price tag.

Tampa, FL – A diamond is a stone. They are formed when carbon molecules are subjected to intense heat and pressure. Nature took millions of years to produce these glittering particles deep within its molten bowels. When ancient volcanoes belched forth their fiery lava flumes they created an oblong shaped tube of rock called kimberlite which was embedded with diamonds, garnets and other types of precious stones. That last time this happened was over 47 million years ago and the natural diamond industry is still mining the results of these events. In order to acquire these geological bounties miners have to tunnel down 3,000 feet or more. If the kimberlite occurred in areas now covered by rivers the workers can sift through the gravel and simply pull them from the residue. During the 1800's Midwesterners in America would find them in the open fields, the last remnants of long melted glaciers that had once blanketed the region.

The task of mining natural diamonds involves intense destruction to the land as open pit mining and deep shafts cause havoc to ecosystems and the inhabitants within. The labor used to gather these stones are often forced into service either by severe poverty or military juntas that want to use the profits they make to fund their terrorist actions. As much as it cost to extract these "blood diamonds" the other reason diamonds cost so much is because the entire market has been a manipulated supply enterprise.

Prior to the 1940's a groom would almost never give a diamond as an engagement gift but in 1948 the De Beers family, a South African diamond company began an advertising campaign that convinced the public that "A Diamond is Forever". This was the slogan that became known as one of the most successful advertising concepts ever used. Diamonds are not considered a very rare commodity but because the De Beers controlled the supply of over 2/3's of the market share it was relatively easy to hoard the stones, create a mystique of their rarity and thus fraudulently inflate their value and raise prices.

Unlike earth-mined diamonds, lab created diamonds cause no harm to the planet, do not fund wars or are not falsely priced based upon the myth their scarcity. Man-made diamonds are made of the same material, carbon, as their natural cousins. The difference is theses stones are created in a lab using the same heat and pressure method that Mother Nature uses but over a period of weeks instead of millions of years.

And just like natural diamonds, lab created diamonds are rated for their clarity, color, cut and carat. Man-made diamonds hold the exact same V rating and will sparkle with brilliance, in fact unlike a mined gem; these diamonds are all created to be perfect – every time. For the jewelry shopper or bride to be, having a choice between perfect stones that have all the beauty and style but none of the horror associated with it should be an easy decision.
