The town is a traditional suburban area with an area of about 24 miles. Currently there are approximately 37,000 people who make the town their home. One of the greatest features of Trumbull real estate is its location; it is only 60 miles from The Big Apple and Hartford CT, and only 20 miles from Stamford and New Haven. It wont take you long to discover that the quaint town is a pleasant commute via the Merritt Parkway, the Hutchison River Parkway or Interstates 95, 91 or 84.
Did you know that the town was originally part of the town of Stratford, which was founded in 1639? In 1728, farming families from a section of Fairfield started to settle in the Chestnut Hill Area, which became part of Long Hill Parish in 1740. After the Revolutionary War, Unity and Long Hill Parishes petitioned for township status, but they were denied for the next 10 years, even though there were many well established farms and a growing population. However, in 1797, the town of Trumbull was incorporated and named in honor of the Governor in 1797. The Governor at the time was a good friend and advisor to George Washington. John Trumbull was the patriarch of one of the most respected families in the history of the state, and was also the first of four Trumbulls who would become governor!
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the town prospered largely as a community with blended agricultural and industrial strengths, with industries like light manufacturing and mining leading the way. There was an important population surge that took place at the end of WWII, as soldiers returning from the war found the area to be a pleasing rural countryside, the charm of the town and the many employment opportunities that were available. The population of the area quadrupled.
There are several athletic complexes and recreational facilities throughout the area, beautiful revitalized commercial districts, retail venues, excellent fine dining options and a plethora of festivals, concerts and other activities to enjoy in the area. The award winning school system includes six elementary schools, two middle schools and the renowned high school, as well as an alternative school and REACH, which buyers who are considering Trumbull real estate will certainly appreciate.
