My 10 Reasons To Go One Extra Mile

From Your Workplace Reporter.

by Jim DeSantis

You should become on of those rare individuals who go out of their way for others. These are people who actually "make your day" by doing something for you that you never expect.

We have come to be jaded when we engage in our work or in our relationships. Sometimes we do the bare minimum required or we simply ignore an unction to go a little beyond what is required.

Fortunately there are still people who operate on a different plane than most of us. They simply have a habit, learned or inborn, that makes them the special people of this world.

A checkout clerk who is particularly attentive, a co-worker who helps you do something not in their job description, or even a family member who does something to handle your crisis to lighten your load. All these people are focusing on making your day a bit more joyful and easier and they are getting precious benefits themselves but that's not their goal.

You see, they know that giving more than you get can never be a bad thing. It's a great principle to live by no matter who you are or what you do. Your high self esteem is something that shines out beyond the boundaries of what you think your deeds mean to others.

Think of it this way. There's nothing that beats the special feeling when someone surprises you by going the extra mile, Yes? Conversly, there is nothing like the feeling you will get when you are the one doing good unto others.

It's obvious that nature encourages the habit of going the extra mile. Every animal or plant in the ecosystem is created to reach beyond human grasp so that they are ever evolving and contributing. Without this programming, the environment would become static and eventually die. It's as if our life force demands that working harder is necessary for survival. If every mand woman and child on the earth adopted this philosophy of going the extra mile the world would undoubtedly be a joyfully better place.

I can remember a world where service was always courteous and delivered with a honest smile. You occasionally still see it today but it's a rare event anymore. We now come to expect troublesome service with a begrudging smile everywhere we go. We are actually startled when a waiter or waitress actually seems to care about our business. Unfortunately, it's possible to still earn a paycheck without ever having to push the boundaries of what you will and will not do in terms of making a customer happy but, if you stretch yourself beyond what is expected, there are great benefits to be had.

My 10 Reasons you should try going the extra mile:

1. Can foster a sense of direction in life 2. Turn you attitude from negative to positive 3. Make you a positive initiator 4. Improve the environment for you and everyone else around you 5. Gives job security 6. You might get a pay raise or promotion without asking 7. Has a positive effect on all those around you – coworkers, clients etc. 8. Clear conscience 9. Will make you a person of action 10. Doing more than expected will give your spirit a boost

That satisfying feeling you get inside when you go the extra mile for someone else is priceless. There's no substitute for getting a heartfelt thanks from someone and you can rest easy in the knowledge that you have made life a whole lot easier for those around you. Not only this, each person you help will look forward to seeing you again, in fact, will seek you out when it comes to giving you some benefit without you even asking for it.

Doing more than expected brings surprise benefits. Why not try to incorporate this idea into your daily life. By setting a goal that you will forget the benefit to you and go out of your way for someone else on a daily basis – you commit yourself to that warm fuzzy glow daily too and you make it easy for others to go the extra mile for you!

One of the biggest benefits of going the extra mile is it will undoubtedly make you stand out in a crowd and, of course, this might just help you achieve that financial or career success you dream of.
